Colonial School. Early 18th century.Colonial School. Early 18th century."Our Lady of Valvanera"Oil on canvas. 62 x 46,5 cm.The iconography comes from the anonymous engraving dedicated to the Captain General of Sea and Land Iñigo de la Cruz Manrique de Lara Ramírez de Arellano (1673-1733). In it one can observe the Virgin Mary’s clothing, the position of the tree, the chest in the foreground and the eagle of the throne, among other details. Before a large tree trunk, the Virgin of Valvanera rests on her throne – the patron of La Rioja— she is richly dressed, with the Child on her knees and a fruit and a flower in her left hand. According to legend, a sinner who repented and became a hermit found the image of the Madonna and Child inside the trunk of an oak, alongside a honeycomb and a spring. He built a hermitage in the place which became a monastery after a time. This painting must be related to the similar painting of Our Lady of Valvanera which presides over the main altarpiece at Saint Maron Cathedral, currently a Syriac Maronite church, but which was the Parish Church of Our Lady of Valvanera until 1922, and previously was the ‘Combento de Balvanera’ (Valvanera Convent). Carved, polychromed and gilded period wooden frame.

The phrase 'ride an elephant' (qi xiang 騎象), has a similar pronunciation as ji xiang (吉祥), meaning 'good fortune'. Furthermore, boys cleaning or 'washing the elephant' (sao xiang 掃象), forms a rebus for 'sweeping away the phenomena of the outside world', which are thought to be mere illusions. The pun is based on the fact that the pronunciation of 'elephant' and 'image' is the same in Chinese (xiang 象). Compare with a related carving of an elephant being groomed by two boys, illustrated in the Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade, Beijing, 2011, no.136.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

By carving the jagged prunus branches in the round, the craftsman created a remarkable vessel for the scholar's studio. The design may have been inspired by rhinoceros-horn raft cups dating to the late Ming period, which were often carved in a way that mimicked a hollowed segment of a gnarled tree trunk detailed with naturalistic knots and twisting boughs.Compare with a similar pale green jade prunus washer, 18th century, illustrated by R.Kleiner, Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, Hong Kong, 1996, no.95.A related jade washer, Qianlong, was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 6 April 2016, lot 63.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Ed Vebell (American, 1921 - 2018) "Lewis and Clark Reach Pacific Ocean" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for Epic Events in American History series issued in 1985. One of the most celebrated moments in American history occurred on the morning of November 7, 1805, when Captain Meriwether Lewis and Captain William Clark stood on a peak in Oregon and gazed at the Pacific Ocean. Clark engraved the historic event on the trunk of a pine tree "By land from the United States, 1804 and 1805," and in his journal quite simply, "reached Cape Disappointment at the entrance of the Columbia River to the Great South Sea and the Pacific Ocean." That brought to a triumphant close an enterprise launched by Christopher Columbus, Admiral of the Ocean Seas, in 1492. It was, characteristically enough, Jefferson who had conceived the expedition, obtained Congressional support, and defied international laws by penetrating the empires of Spain and of Britain. What is more, Jefferson set down in detail the agenda of the expedition "... to find the most direct and practical water communications to the Pacific," explore the mineral and other resources of the vast West, keep records of temperature, flora, fauna, the customs of the Indian tribes, and lay the foundations for American claims to the whole of the "Oregon" country. That was both bold and ambitious, but in the end Britain gave in to the reality that Lewis and Clark had been the forerunners, and that the United States could make good its claim.
