The depiction of the Holy Family focuses on the figure of the Madonna, whose face, shown in profile, has a balanced and almost joyous expression. She holds the Baby Jesus on her lap, sucking from her breast. The atmosphere is intimate, and the tones clear and soft. St. Joseph points to Jesus. Its unconventional position, seen from behind, gives the composition a sense of depth of perspective. A tree trunk appears in the background, along with a wide view of the mountains and the sky illuminated by streaks of light.Everything in the painting contributes to the creation of a calm and balanced atmosphere that gives the piece a contemplative quality.Oil on copperSize 19 x 25.5 cm

Royal Interest: A square of lace that has been handed down through the family of the vendor, it came from Osbourne House on the Isle of Wight and was reputed to have been part of the lace veiling that shrouded HM Queen Victoria as she lay in her coffin in January 1901, the lace measures; 16 x 27½ inches approx, small hole in the centre The original provenance is included in the lot, dated 01/02/1901I was given the Lace and note by my Grandmother many decades ago. I have kept it stored in a trunk in which I keep special items.Recently I was going through the trunk and showing my daughter the items that had come down through the family. She suggested that I should show the lace with note to an Antiques Specialist as it looked like it might be of historical importance and interest.I approached Hanson’s who put me in touch with Notty as she has years of experience in such items. The Lace I think was inherited down through my Grandfathers family and came into my Grandmothers possession after his death in 1978.My Grandfather kept a family journal that dates back to the 1800s . The journal gives a great incite into his branch of the family through photographs, newspaper clippings, announcements and a copy of his family tree titled “ Extract from the Genealogical Magazine for 1899. The Royal Decent of Carlyon”. (The family name carried on through the generations - myself, daughter and grandson included). The Lace must have been given to a relative of my Great Grandparents generation either through an Army connection as several members of the family were in the Indian Army or possibly one of my ancestors was a companion lady to Queen Victoria !!I have always been fascinated by family history, my Grandmother shared incites and family stories with me and gave me many photos and special items. The Lace is historically interesting, so just sitting in my trunk seems a waste. It needs to be seen and appreciated, hence my reason for selling itPlease note this Lot will need to be collected from Head Office in Etwall
