A walnut veneered and feather-banded eight-day longcase clock: the 12-inch brass dial behind a glazed door flanked by two columns, the silver chapter ring with Roman numerals and signed Jno. Austin - Wattford [sic] and cornered by ornately pierced spandrels with two cherubic-style figures holding aloft a crown in veneration of the 1660 Restoration of the Stuart monarchy; the textured centre dial with subsidiary seconds dial (hand missing) and ornately engraved date aperture above the 6 o'clock position; tall rectangular and feather banded trunk door with oval glass pendulum viewing aperture; the movement striking on a bell; crossbanded lower section; raised on plinth base, with weights and pendulum. (209.5 cm high)Condition: We're not sure if the case is contemporary with the movement. The clock was refurbished circa 1940. Although looks good together, newer wood has been put onto the platform so it sits correctly.
A late 18th/early 19th century dome-topped continental pine trunk: ironwork carrying handle between two iron strengthening straps and the top dated with figures and signs with a crucifix and naïve style decoration, the lid lifting to reveal various continental scripts, probably 19th century (58.5cm wide x 31.5cm deep x 28.5cm high)
A pair of late 19th century German porcelain three-light figural candelabra: 1. a boy treading grapes, another raising a cup and climbing out of the hollow of a tree trunk, and a third figure seated on a leopard skin. 2. three cherubic-style figures, one lying drunk on the ground.Each with applied flowerheads and fruiting vine in high relief, blue painted 'R' mark to underside. A George III period oak-cased 30-hour longcase clock: the broken swan-neck pediment above a 12-inch brass and silvered dial flanked by fluted columns; the silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and circular date-hand above the 6 o'clock position, the dial signed 'Michl. Wilde - Wakefield' and flanked by pierced, gilt-metal spandrels; shaped trunk door; raised on short bracket feet; with pendulum and weight. (220 cm high). (With 1991 insurance document for £500 and dating the clock as circa 1800.)

Moss, MRN, no.28.Elephants are, of course, not native to Japan but a small number arrived as high-level gifts during the Edo period (1615-1868), most famously a pair imported from Vietnam to Nagasaki on a Chinese ship in 1728 on the orders of shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune. The female soon died but the male was brought all the way to Edo (present-day Tokyo), a distance of over 1,200 km, and lived until 1743. There are a number of variations of this form, though the mythical creature is often depicted in profile. The makara issues from a spray of churning waters. His head tilts back dramatically revealing a double set of teeth and curling trunk. Once forming part of the apex of a torana, this and another makara would have flanked either side of a Garuda positioned at the center. A complete example of the upper section of a torana is depicted in the Rubin Museum of Art (C2003.21.3; HAR 65234).
