Jemdet Nasr, Ca. 3000 BC. A stone amulet in the form of a stylised elephant, with a compact body and short, rounded legs. The head is slightly elongated, with prominent curved ears and a downward-turned trunk. Circular perforations mark the eyes, and a larger hole is drilled through the back for suspension.Size: 15mm x 14mm; Weight: 3gProvenance: Prince collection, 1990s-2014; Ex. Ca. 2400 - 2100 BC. A terracotta chalice with a deep cup set upon a tall, tapering stem that broadens into a wide, circular foot. The cup is decorated with a painted frieze, divided into four sections by parallel lines. Two sections depict a bird with an elongated body, segmented wings, and a curved beak, another features a stylised peepal tree with a vertically striated trunk and radiating branches ending in pointed leaves, while a third presents a single peepal leaf. Ca. AD 400 - 500.An upper section of a gypsum mould cast for oil lamps. The recessed cavity follows the form of a Hayes Type IIA lamp, with a central discus featuring a relief of a palm tree with a slender trunk and symmetrically arranged fronds. William Lister of Newcastle upon Tyne- Mahogany 8-day longcase clock c 1830, with a break-arch top, fretwork and three ball finials, conforming hood door beneath flanked by rectangular pilasters, long trunk with reeded columns and a long gothic arched door, on a rectangular plinth with a shaped base, painted dial with floral spandrels and flowers to the arch, Roman numerals, minute track and stamped brass hands, subsidiary seconds and date dials with matching brass hands, dial pinned directly to a rack striking movement, striking the hours on a bell. Illuminated English letters patent or diploma of nobility dated August 5th, 1763. Ink on vellum manuscript. Featuring an elaborately executed gilt foliate border; the first line depicting a royal portrait of King George III followed by arms of Ireland, Scotland, and Great Britain with military trophies. Three additional coats of arms along the left edge, including the Duke of Northumberland and the House of St. George. With the Great Seal of England in brown wax attached by plaited gilt cords. Signed and endorsed "John Lodge Deputy Clerk & Keeper of the Rolls" along the verso. Dated "the fifth day of August in the third year of the Reign of King George the Third." With wooden case featuring with finely tooled leather and marbled paper lining, manufactured by trunk maker, Samuel Barlow. This lot is a notable example of Early Modern script and illustration, indicative of the addressee's power and influence.Provenance: From the Collection of Elwood Rafn; Private Minnesota Collection.(Document, approximately without seal) height: 31 in x width: 30 3/4 in. (Case) height: 3 1/2 in x width: 33 in x depth: 10 1/2 in.Condition: There are no major tears or losses. Wear throughout commensurate with age including creases, toning, and some soiling, especially along the extreme edges. Undulation throughout consistent with being rolled. Heavy wear to the case including splits and wormholes in the wood, large losses to the leather along the left and right sides, and tarnishing to the metal components. The lock operates; however, the case is lacking a key.
Two Cambodian silver betel nut boxes, modelled as a turtle and an elephant, the turtle with cross-hatched carapace, the elephant with long tusks and trunk raised, a Chinese white metal hexagonal small box with hinged lid, repoussé decorated with dragon, phoenix and other creatures and symbols, and two Peruvian silver ash trays, each inset with a five peso piece dated 1889 and 1916. (5) £140-£160 --- Betel nut boxes were used to store the areca nut (sometimes known as the betel nut) which would be wrapped in a betel leaf with lime paste and other ingredients, often tobacco, for chewing. Condition Report Elephant: stamped *30 Turtle: two-character native mark and .90 Both in good condition Box: height 4cm, diameter 5cm, good condition. Ashtrays: one slightly mis-shapen, 1889 peso with light wear, 1916 with a slightly more wear.
