A monumental ni-Vanuatu slit drum,20th century, carved hardwood,274cm high (9ft)Slit drums are among the most widespread musical instruments in the Pacific Islands. In some areas, small examples are made from bamboo, being naturally hollow, however, the majority are carved from wood, the solid branch or trunk of a tree laboriously hollowed out to create an interior resonating chamber. They are played by striking the edge of the slit with cylindrical wooden 'drum sticks' to produce sonorous tones and intricate rhythms. Those hewn from the trunks of massive trees are amongst the largest, free-standing musical instruments in the world. Some are in the region of twenty feet high.Provenance: The Tim Wonnacott Collection.
