8th-6th century BC. A chalcedony cylinder seal with sacred tree flanked by rearing monsters and solar disc; accompanied by a museum-quality impression and a copy of an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: Cylinder Seal of Chalcedony, 21.5 x 11 mm. In the middle of the design is a sacred tree, and above reared up: a quadruped with horns, wings, and head turned away. A rhomb is placed between the trunk of the tree and the monster to the right. For a terminal there is a lunar crescent. This is a Neo-Assyrian or Neo-Babylonian seal, c. 800-600 B.C. It is in good state of preservation. 4.34 grams, 21mm (3/4"). From a London, UK, collection; acquired 1970s. This lot is part of a single collection of cylinder seals which were examined in the 1980s by Professor Lambert and most are accompanied by his own detailed notes; the collection has recently been reviewed by Dr. Ronald Bonewitz. Height 234 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: In our opinion this clock is not a marriage. The seatboard is clearly original and the mask around the face fits very well. The clock is of generally good quality and in reasonable condition overall. The hood is in generally good condition with very minor scuffs, blemishes and small losses. The clock dial is very dirty but complete and undamaged. The movement is reasonably clean but the mechanism for the operation of the moon phase is missing. We have the weights and pendulum and the clock winds as it should. We have not had the clock running as the crutch through which the pendulum fits is broken although we do have the piece. When weight is applied to both the strike and gong train then the movement appear to operate. The case itself is in generally reasonable order. The dentil work below the hood has small areas of loss as does the fretwork collar. The trunk door is not significantly warped but does have minor veneer stress fractures as does the base panel. The sides of the clock are in good order and the bracket feet appear to be original.
An oak sectional bookcase, Globe Wernicke, three tier, with lead glazed doors and low drawer. Width 85 cm, height 128 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Other than having a cracked glass the hood is in generally good order. There are two minor stress fractures at the rear of the arch on each side of the glazed door frame. The sides of the piece are in good order as is the trunk door and base. There are no significant issues with the case. The dial is a little dirty and one spandrel requires reattaching. The clock is currently ticking on the going train but not striking. There is a problem with the left hand winding mechanism and the right hand winding mechanism is fully wound.
An early 19th century mahogany longcase clock, with swans neck pediment above an arched glazed door enclosing the painted dial and eight day striking movement by D. Lyon, Lanark, the trunk with applied mouldings and arched door and raised on short turned feet. Height including finial 230 cm.
A George III mahogany cased longcase clock, with swans neck pediment above the arched glazed door enclosing a silvered brass dial marked "Rob. Alexander, Leith" and with two-train musical movement, flanked by fluted columns with brass capitals, with long arched trunk door and conforming base raised on short turned feet. Height 216 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This clock is in generally good condition. The hood is in very good order with no significant damage or losses. The case is similarly in very good condition. The door is not warped and the base is also in very good condition. The silvered brass dial is very dirty but serviceable. The movement is dirty but appears to be complete and whilst we have not had the clock working when weight is applied to both the going and the strike train the movement does appear to operate. The movement is on six bells and the large main strike bell. When the hands are operated this would suggest that the movement chimes on the quarter, the half, the three quarter and also on the full. The tune is probably a simple folk tune and not specifically Whittington or Westminster chimes. We do not know the name of the tune. We have both weights, the pendulum and the key.
An early 19th century mahogany longcase clock, Scottish, with swans neck pediment above the arched painted dial with spandrels emblematic of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and scene of Queen Mary's Landing to the arch, the dial marked "Jas. A 19th century mahogany cased shop regulator, the dial inscribed "Oldridge, Birkenhead", the movement by Condliff, Liverpool, with mercury weighted pendulum. Dial diameter 35.5 cm, height 250 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock is in generally extremely good condition. The case is in extremely good order indeed with no significant issues. As one would expect there has been the odd minor repair but no significant issues. Looking at the hood there are minor stress cracks in the veneers in places but again these are not problematic. The trunk door is not warped. The veneers around the door are in good condition and the same can be said of the base. The side panels are in generally good condition. The bottom left and bottom right hand panels have minor vertical veneer stress fractures. The feet are original and in good condition. The movement appears to be in very good order. It is clean and complete and there are no missing elements. The mercury has been removed from the pendulum and we have not had the clock ticking. When weight is applied the movement does however appear to tick and operate as it should.
