IllustratedThese were used in determining the risks from inflammable and suffocating gases, known to miners as 'firedamp' and 'choke damp'. As the gas was heavier than air, and combined with a drop to low atmospheric pressure, it would be driven to the lowest and least ventilated galleries.

IllustratedJohn Williamson was born around 1651 in Guisley, near Leeds. He died in 1748. A maker of high repute, he trained in London, and gained his Freedom of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1682, returning the following year to Leeds.An interesting movement signed 'John Williamson near Temple Bar Londini Fecit', in a modern case, was sold at Christie's, London, 11 March 1988.

A good set of Chinese carved and pierced mother of pearl games counters, late 19th century, all engraved to both sides with various scenes of Chinese figures and animals amongst houses and trees, pierced borders, comprising forty-two long rectangular counters, 64 by 26 by 3mm, twelve short rectangular counters, 45 by 31 by 3mm, and sixteen circular counters 38 by 3mm, all held in a 19th century dome topped trunk form wooden box, inlaid with alternating bands of veneer, brass escutcheon, with key, 12.8 by 9.8 by 10.6cm, together with a further seven mother of pearl fish tokens, two a/f.Provenance: The Estate of Mr Joseph B.
