Frans Floris, Cornelis Cort - Hercules fights the centaurs / Description: Hercules Prevents the Centaurs from abducting Hippodamia; Hercules fights the centaurs with his club and overturns a table with a vine archway behind; a figure at left has an arrow through his head and is pinned to a tree trunk. From the set of the labours of Hercules, engraved by Cornelis Cort after a lost serie of paintings of Frans Floris. Frans Floris composed the twelve works of Hercules into ten paintings. AN EARLY INDIAN BRONZE FIGURE OF GANESHAIndia, c. 16th century. The four-armed deity seated in lalitasana on a lotus base, one hand on his knee and holding a bowl of sweets, the other hand in vitarka mudra, and the two back hands holding a mala and an axe, his face with a long trunk, flanked by large ears, and surmounted by a headdress and conical crown. Condition: Good condition with minor surface wear, minuscule nicks, light scratches, manufacturing flaws, the base with dents, and areas of malachite encrustations. Provenance: Estate of an Austrian collector, the collection was assembled in the 1980s - 1990s through purchases at Galerie Zacke and other specialized galleries in Vienna. A BRONZE FIGURE OF GANESHA, SOUTH INDIA, 17TH-18TH CENTURYHeavily cast, seated on a round pedestal encircled by lotus petals, flanked by his vehicle the rat holding a ladoo ball and a cobra rising over sweets, his four hands holding an axe, prayer beads, a goad, and a ladoo ball which he samples from with his trunk. The body adorned with a beaded necklace and a short dhoti around his waist. The face with large almond-shaped eyes and neatly incised brows, the hair secured by a tall crown. A SANCAI-GLAZED 'ELEPHANT' CANDLEHOLDER, MING DYNASTY 明代三彩太平有象燭臺China 15th-17th century. Standing foursquare on a rectangular base, the pachyderms trunk swung to one side, a flowing saddle blanket draping downward, its back supporting a central cylindrical candleholder extending as part of the caparison. The animal detailed with almond-shaped eyes, large ears, curved tusks, a long tail, and subtly carved wrinkles. The elephant's skin is glazed in a creamy gray with hues of pale green, its inner ears in amber, while its caparison, decorated with flanking lappets, is glazed emerald-green and amber.Provenance: From the private estate of Roland de la Moussaye, Paris, France. An old label to the base. Roland de la Moussaye (1932-2022) was a French scholar with broad interests and vast expertise. He studied ornithology and lepidopterology, writing several books on the subjects, and worked as a professor of French literature in Japan. He studied Chinese, Indonesian, and Malay, receiving a degree in Chinese from the Ecole des langues orientales, and was an avid collector of Chinese art. The model is finished in traditional green paintwork with polished bright work. 37cm long, 18cm wide, 37cm high including hardwood plinth The Stuart Turner Swan was one of the most successful engines used in full size steam launches but sadly is no longer available from Stuarts for model engineers to build.
