A George III and later marquetry inlaid mahogany long case clock, the domed hood with three brass finials above a central panel inlaid with a rams head above fluted columns enclosing a brass dial with silvered chapter ring, pierced foliate spandrels date aperture and subsidiary seconds, inscribed Benjamin Wilson London, the trunk with profusely inlaid arched door within brass inlaid quartered columns, box base raised on bracket feet, 252cm high
MARILYN MONROE INTEREST: A vintage travel trunk, 20th century, by repute once belonging to Marilyn Monroe, initialled 'M.M.' to the lid, applied labels for 'Hotel Du Lac, Interlaken', 'Carlton Hotel Tivoli, Lucerne', and other international hotels including ones in London and Paris, with various applied and partially removed luggage labels, the ribbed trunk of typical form with fabric lined interior and removable top tray, 88cm x 53cm x 51cm Provenance: The trunk was given to British actor Richard Wattis by Marilyn when they worked together on the Prince And The Showgirl (released 1957). The trunk was too big for Wattis's house, so he gave it to fellow thespian Derrick Hammond-Stroud. He kept it in his loft until his friends Jeffrey and Dorothy Benton moved house in 1968. Dorothy was a big Marilyn fan and needed something to keep clothes in, so Hammond-Stroud gave her the trunk. It is now being sold by the Benton family in aid of the Mario Lanza Education Foundation. CONDITION REPORT:The trunk appears to be in original condition with period travel labels and no evidence of retouching to the 'M.M.'. The vendor has indicated that they would be happy to provide a letter to the purchaser confirming the provenance given above.

A large WW1 metal rectangular metal trunk with a painted finish, with a metal plaque, inscribed 'Earl of Altamont, Royal Scots Greys' 2nd Lieutenant Captain Earl of Altamont (Ulick de Burgh Browne), 7th Marquess of Sligo, 2nd Dragoons (The Royal Scots Greys) was born in 1898 was educated at Eton and at The Royal Military College Sandhurst. He served during the European War of 1914-18 with the rank of Captain and was awarded The Military Cross.
