India, 19th-early 20th century AD. Cast bronze puja lamp in the form of an elephant holding the lamp well in its trunk, on its back is a tribal goddess holding a large pot on her head. 579 grams, 18.5cm (7 1/4"). From an old London collection, formed in the 1980s. A tribal puja lamp for use in the daily worship of a deity. The lamp would be filled with ghee (clarified butter) and lit using a wick and then moved in a circular motion before the image of a deity to the accompaniment of prayers and music. The elephant, goddess and pot (a symbol of the goddess) are all auspicious symbols. Made in Bastar region, central India. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

India, 19th-early 2oth century AD. Cast bronze door handle in the form of an elephant's head grasping a ring in its trunk; on the top of the head is a decorative cover and on the forehead is a Trishul, or trident; below this is the sacred syllable Om. 1.1 kg, 19cm (7 1/2"). Acquired on the London art market in the late 1980s. The inclusion of the Trishul and Om symbols indicate that this is the head of the god Ganesha, who is a guardian of doorways, amongst many other functions. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

India, 19th-early 20th century AD. Cast bronze betel nut cutters in the form of a Makara looking backwards. 335 grams, 19cm (7 1/2"). Private collection, London, UK; acquired prior to 1990. A makara is a mythical aquatic monster, usually identified with a crocodile, although often shown with an elephant's trunk, a fish tail or foliated tail. The makara symbolizes water, the source of all existence and fertility, and is the conveyance of the goddess Ganga. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

Lot 48

A late 19c German two weight Vienna regulator by Gustav Becker, the large and ornate walnut case having a double cresting with a broken pediment mounted above a semi circular pediment with turned finials at each side. The glazed trunk door is flanked by turned baluster columns which stop three quarters of the way up the door to allow two carved horses to stand beneath semi circular covers. The gadrooned base has a central half finial and side finials and the two train movement has a deadbeat escapement and strikes on a gong. The 8" two piece dial is of cream enamel with Roman numerals and the clock measures 54" tall overall.

Lot 51

A mid 18c thirty hour longcase clock, the 12" square brass dial signed Richard Midgeley (probably Halifax). The dial has floral spandrels to the corners, a date ring, dummy winding holes and a Halifax penny moon above the centre with a separate aperture indicating the day of the moon. The chapter ring has Roman numerals and outer Arabic five minute numbers. The hands are unmatched steel, the movement is chain driven with countwheel striking on a bell. It is contained in a tall oak case which has been heavily re-carved at a later date. The hood has a flat top with broad outstanding top moulding and turned columns flanking the dial, the trunk has a long rectangular trunk door. The base has an inset rectangular panel and a wavy plinth, from the top moulding to plinth the whole is profusely covered in Victorian carving, 87" tall overall.

Lot 52

A late 18c eight day longcase clock, the 12" arched silvered dial signed William Marsh, London and having strike/silent (mechanism removed) and seconds dials (the date aperture has been filled). The five pillar movement has rack strike and anchor escapement and brass bound weights and brass pendulum rod. It is contained in a black lacquered case with full arched hood and plain columns flanking the dial. The trunk door is divided into two transfer printed scenes, the top one of a shepherdess and her flock and the lower showing a domestic scene of a couple, these are divided by gold lacquered floral and geometric panels. The door has a raised edge London type moulding and the base has another transfer panel showing a bird and floral display, the clock has a plain plinth and stands 85.5" tall.

CONDITION REPORT: No warranty given to working condition of movement, dial has probably been re-painted and has later touching up, trunk and hood in good condition for age with some knocks and wear in places.
