A VICTORIAN MAHOGANY AND LEATHER UPHOLSTERED CHESTERFIELD SOFA IN THE MANNER OF JAMES SHOOLBRED, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY 190cm wide, 72.5cm high, 89cm deepProvenance:Anthony Outred, 25th February 2010, £8,000 Receipt notes that "This Chesterfield belonged to the Mayor of Truro, Cornwall" Condition Report: Marks, scratches, wear and abrasions comensurate with age and usePlease refer to all additional images available via email for visual reference to condition. condition off the leather surface is fair overall for the age but please read all following notes and refer to all additional images. It has a good rich colour and patina. There are a number of small holes that appear likely to have been created by ash from a cigarette etc (see images) This mainly seems to be confined to one arm of the sofa (see images) To the rear corner of the of the same arm the stitching along one seem has come undone and needs re-stitching. A number of other 'folded seams' of the sofa are revealed to have been stitched beneath the fold (see images) This may possibly have been done when the sofa was upholstered or may be repairs. Small nails have been put in along the front edges of each of the two exterior side panels (see images) These appear to be later. At each front corner of the seat there are two areas of stitching in straight lines. one of each is beneath a folded seam. There are some old repairs including some stitched repairs (see all additional images) In some areas the stitiching has come loose and needs to be re-stitched. To one side panel there is an area of short tears . It appears that an attempt has been made to glue/ repair this previously. Some of the 'piped seams' at the lowest edge of the upholstery throughout have been re-glued and there is a meeting of the piping towards the centre of each side panel. One one side this is slightly loose and untidy (see image)Please refer to all additional images for any other noticeable condition observations. There may be other repairs or seperated seams that are not immediately detectable Some of the 'buttons' to the upholstery are likely old replacements as vary in colour to a degree. There are some old repairs including some stitched repairs (see all additional images) In some areas the stitiching has come loose and needs to be re-stitched. To one side panel there is an area of short tears . It appears that an attempt has been made to glue/ repair this previously. The seat is relatively firm overall, although this is a matter of personal interpretation to a degree of course. The springs all appear to be in place (although we cannot guarantee this as they are not visible, the springs seem operate as expected considering the age and use. No obvious areas where the seat is more soft or spongy. The measurement of the seat only is 130cm wide (at the centre) (the seat does taper out towards the front of the seat), 55cm deep (at the centre) overallHeight of the seat is approximately 46cm at the highest point (when not sat on)The sofa frame is of solid structure overall Condition Report Disclaimer
