A George III painted and parcel gilt sofaCirca 1780, with fluting and husk carving, the seat frame interspersed by patera angles and centred with a drapery swag tablet, on stiff-leaf headed fluted tapering legs terminating in brass cappings and castors, re-decorated, 242cm wide.Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Frank Green Esq., formerly of The Treasurer's House, York.A set of eight very similar model of giltwood armchairs to the offered sofa featured at Christie's, London, 25 May 1972, Important English Furniture, lot 81. These eight chairs had provenance to the Lords Morley of Saltram House, Devonshire. Saltram was one of the historic properties for which Thomas Chippendale provided furniture during the period 1770-72. Another related chair to the present sofa, albeit mahogany rather than a painted example, which likewise dates to circa 1780, forms part of the collection of fine furniture at Temple Newsam House, near Leeds. This comparable is illustrated in C. A George III mahogany sofa table, fitted with two frieze drawers and two dummy drawers, with silhouette end supports, high stretcher and downswept legs terminating in brass castors. Width 99 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Table depth front to back 68 cm. width left to right flaps down 99 cm, length of each flap 27.5 cm. The table is generally in very good condition. It is structurally sound with no loose joints. The top is in good condition with only very minor old marks. The flaps are not warped. Both drawers run smoothly and appear to have the original handles. There are no breaks to the legs and the castors appear to be original. We can see no evidence of any woodworm. The opposing dummy drawers have all the knobs. There is no evidence of any woodworm.
A LATE VICTORIAN MAHOGANY HIGH BACKED SOFA by Howard & Sons, the sides and back cushions attached to the frame, having two loose seat cushions and square tapering front legs and brass casters, stamped 'Howard & Sons Limited Berners Street' to the back left leg and numbered 19187 and 2938, all casters stamped, 170cm wide x 75cm deep x 80cm high.
