William Roos (Welsh, 1808-1878) Portrait of a seated lady, resting her arm on a sofa, in a brown dress, lace blouse and gold jewellery signed "Wm. Roos / pinxit /1852", with a cartoon of a man's head to the reverse oil on canvas 76 x 62cm (30 x 24in) Provenance: Exning House, Newmarket, Suffolk Oil on canvas which has been lined and a painted inscription copied onto the reverse of the lining canvas. The canvas is in plane and the paint layer is stable. There are dark cracks running through the sitter's forehead. The painting has a very yellowed and degraded varnish which is matte and patchy in appearance. The frame has significant wear and loss to the gilding.
