A REGENCY ROSEWOOD AND PADOUK SOFA TABLEWith partridge wood crossbanded top, above four frieze drawers, supports joined by an arched stretcher, 152cm wide (open); 86cm deep; 70cm highProvenance: By repute the 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847-1929). Sold Christie’s, London 2000, The Property of a Lady, lot 136. Acquired by the previous owner from a London dealer in the 1950s, who suggested this table came from the collection of the Earls of Rosebery, which was originally dispersed in 1939. Condition report: Mahogany drawer linings. Shrinkage to the top with split forming across the central section (see extra image). Fading and the inevitable scuffs, scrathes, dents, small chips and marks commensurate with wear, use and age.Some lifting to areas of the inlaid stringing in places. Some old worm to the carcass, noticeable along the bottom edge of one side below the frieze drawers. Tidied up at some point; some light re-gluing in the odd area, noticeable along the frieze edge where some of the inlay is recessed to the side of the frieze drawer. See images.

Old repair to the back leg on the right hand side. Some shrinkage between the stretcher and the back left leg. Upholstery dirty, stained and generally worn. No fire regulation labels. Mahogany framed bergere three-piece suite, comprising a two-seat sofa and two single armchairs, shell crestings, green brocade upholstery and cushions, sofa length 138cm, depth 76cm, height 78cm, armchairs width 68cm, depth 76cm.Qty: 3Condition report:One of the armchairs has a compression puncture to the back cane panel. Otherwise all other panels of cane work are ok, but all are heavily faded in colour and have spot staining. The frames all have spots of white paint to them and look generally uncared, but are structurally ok, with some marks, knocks and scratches. The upholstered elements are discoloured and spot stained and so would need re-upholstering.
Mahogany sofa table, late 19th century, rosewood crossbanding with Greek Key boxwood stringing, canted end leaves, two frieze drawers, turned end supports joined by a double stretcher, width (closed) 111cm, depth 69cm, height 73cm.Condition report:There is obvious colour variation between the top and drop ends. One corner to the top has a split through the veneer, approximately 15cm in length. There is another triangular spliced patch repair to the veneer to the opposing corner, and another patch repair just above, Various random lengths of stringing to the outlines are missing. The vase section is very dry but is generally ok without any obvious breaks or splits to the supports or stretchers. It has the feel that it has been in outbuildings for some time. With some work it could return to being a handsome table.
