Full title: Francesco Binfare (1939): 'On the Rocks' sofa for Edra, 2004Description: H 72 - L 363 - D 188 cm (dimensions based on the current set-up) The structure in poplar plywood. Feet in ABS and PTU. Padding in polyurethane foam and Gellyfoam®. Undercover in polyamide. Cover partially in Lycra. Removable cover. Francesco Binfare (r.1939 in Milan, Italy) achieved his artistic education under his father's direction and started working for Cassina in 1960. At first as a researcher for new technologies, then as Cesare Cassina's assistant for both new projects and the realization of prototypes. From 1969 to 1976 he was the director of the Centro Cassina and participated in the creation of several 20th C. design icons including Gateano Pesce's Up Series (1969) and Paolo Deganello's AEO chair (1973). He helped bring to fruition several other seminal Cassina projects - Toshiyuki Kita's Wink (1980), Getano Pesce's Tramonto a New York (1980) and Feltri (1987), and Paolo Deganello's Torso (1982). In 1992, Binfare was invited by Massimo Morozzi to design for Edra. His early work for Edra included L'Homme et la Femme (1993), Tangeri (1994) and Angels (1996) for Edra. In the 21st century, Binfare has created a number of new seating icons - On the Rocks (2004), Flap (2006), Absolu (2015), and Essential (2016). Interior photos by Kato Peeters.
Y A REGENCY ROSEWOOD AND BRASS INLAID SOFA TABLE CIRCA 181574.5cm high, 142cm wide (when open), 71cm deep Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Old chips, splits and losses. Old veneer repairs - see images for details. One handle detached but present. Handles are later replacements. Some fading to top in places. Both drawers stamped 'MORGAN'. One side of the table stamped with serial number '3076'.Some splits and ink stains to bottoms of drawers. Sections of the brass stringing are lacking and some other sections are lifting - see images. Old repairs made to legs - see images for details. Dowels, glue and metal bracing have been used. The joins between two of the legs and the lozenge moulding are opening slightly. Glue residue is visible to one of these joins. Slight movement within the fame overall. Old splits and chips, including a larger split to one hinged leaf - see images. Fading to timber - see images. Some old veneer repairs. One roundel the the end supports has been replaced. All other metalware appears original. Slight movement within fame. 19th century paper linings to the drawers with the expected discolourations, tears and some losses. Two feet with dowel and glued repairs - see images. Some rubbing and losses to the simulated rosewood surface in places. Some later screws securing hinges. Minor evidence of old worm. WILLSON, 68 GREAT QUEEN STREET'72cm high, 152cm wide (when open), 62cm deep Condition Report: There are scratches, marks, knocks and abrasions consistent with age and use.The fiddleback mahogany top has some ring stains and several old deep gouged scratches.With a chip to the corner on the end of the ruled joint of one drop leaf; some chips around the drawer opening edges.Some splits within the grain of the timber of the drawer bases.The metal reinforcements under the reeded legs appear to be original.Please see the additional photographs for a visual reference of condition.Condition Report Disclaimer
