Ernest Race - Race Furniture - A suite of furniture from the Sheppey range, to include two armchairs and a two seat sofa of ash construction with stove-enamelled steel frames, bearing paper labels and upholstered in green hopsack style cloth, together with an unlabelled ash veneered coffee or occasional table of square form, height 30cm and 57cm square, S/D. (4)NB- The Sheppey range was the winner of a Design Centre Award in 1963. Provenance - Originally purchased by the present owner's father, an architect, directly from Race Furniture. The original upholstery was grey cloth, then a mustard yellow before the current green cloth upholstery. The suite was returned to Race Furniture each time it was re-upholstered. The chairs and sofa in this lot are offered for sale as works of art. They may not comply with the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) Safety Regulations 1988 and for this reason should not be used in a private dwelling.
A green foliate upholstered three seat sofa with scroll arms 220 cm wide x 92 cm deep CONDITION REPORTS Cushions are feather filled. Fading to the upholstery variously, otherwise general wear and tear conducive with age and use - see images for more details. Height 82cm. Seat height approx 46cm including cushions.
A 19TH CENTURY ANGLO-INDIAN CEYLONESE, COROMANDEL BANDED, SATINWOOD SOFA TABLEOn spiral fluted column and four downswept supports 102cm wide; 72cm highCondition report: Overall in good condition. Signs of wear, including small nicks and chips, minor crackling to the timber surface and other general minor shrinkage and movement of timbers, commensurate with age. Some small losses, notably a small missing section to the edge of the coromandel moulding where the drop-leaf hinges. The same area on the other side has been repaired. Inevitable minor chips to the edges and to the feet. Some repair work to tips of feet.The drop leaves are slightly less sun faded. The handles to the drawers and faux drawers are mother of pearl inlaid horn bun handles.
A MODERN GREEN UPHOLSTERED TWO SEAT SOFAOn turned ebonised supports, 180cm wide; 92cm deep; 90cm highCondition Report: The cushions are filled with synthetic fibres, they are not feather filled. The material covering the sofa requires cleaning, with various old marks, dust and dirt commensurate with use and age. There is no apparent label identifying the nature of the material but it looks like a linen - a cotton / wool / synthetic mix. 92 cm deep from the back of the sofa to the front of the seat. The cushions can make the sofa deeper depending if they are tucked in tightly, or not.

Various other scuffs, shrinkage veneers and signs of wear commensurate with use and age. The rosewood has faded and surfaces polished and varnished at some point. Otherwise in good sturdy order. The seat rails have not been examined because of the dust sheets. Upholstery in good order but with the typical dirt and dust as to be expected.
