A George III Style Mahogany, Amboyna, Tulipwood and Satinwood Sofa TableSecond Half 19th Centurywith mahogany-lined drawers.Height 28 1/4 x width (open) 58 1/8 x depth 25 5/8 inches.This lot is located in Chicago.With key. The top is constructed in sections when viewed from the underside. Blackened surface inside the pocket screw holes. Old nails without an identifiable purpose on an applied board on the cross strut. The pine divider between the drawers probably planed down, stained, and with old color and holes, along with patches that do not make sense. The casters' caps are not set recessed into the legs. Dripped stain on the cross stretcher. All of these factors suggest that although there are hallmarks of 18th century construction, and signs the table was made using older timber, it is not a Georgian table. The drawer linings are also coarser-grained mahogany which indicates a later date, and no quarter fillets on the insides of the drawers. Condition reports are available upon request. East and West Africa 1887-1900, 1 clasp, 1893-94 (13456. Sergt. D. Clarke. R.E.) officially engraved naming, minor edge bruising, very fine and scarce £200-£300 --- Donald Clarke was born in Golshire, Sutherland, Scotland. He was a Surveyor by trade, and joined the Royal Engineers aged 22 at Chatham in February 1876. Clarke was classed as a very superior land surveyor, and his service included the Anglo Portuguese Boundary Commission of 1892, and the Sofa Expedition, 1893-94 (entitled to L.S. & G.C.). He was discharged in February 1896, having served for 21 years and 66 days. The medal roll for this clasp gives awards to 2 officers, 2 Sergeants and 8 Sappers of the Royal Engineers.
