BORGE MORGENSEN (Denmark, 1914 - 1972)Two-seater sofa model Kupé 2192, 1970s.Walnut wood and brown leather upholstery. This sofa, still in production, is currently worth 19000 € in store.Measurements: 107 x 153 x 90 cm.The combination of simple, clean lines and expert craftsmanship are the trademarks of Børge Mogensen. The Kupé sofa is among his finest works, designed in the 1960s. Mogensen was one of the pioneers who created the basis for Danish design as a furniture design culture. His lifelong ambition was to create durable and useful furniture that would enrich people's daily lives, and he designed functional furniture for all parts of the home and society, such as the present example, the Kupé sofa. It is a sofa with a walnut wood frame, visible only at the legs, with a body entirely upholstered in brown leather in each of its modules and loose cushions.Børge Mogensen was one of the most prominent representatives of the generation of designers who gave birth to the Danish design concept, now known worldwide. He began his career as a cabinetmaker in 1934, and two years later began his studies at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, where he was taught by Kaare Klint. He then entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, graduating as an architect in 1942. That same year he began working as design director for FDB, finally setting up on his own in 1950. Functional is the word that best describes Mogensen's design; most of his creations were conceived for industrial production, and are characterized by solid, simple lines, studied almost scientifically to be as functional as possible. Among his many awards is the Honorary Royal Designer for Industry (London, 1972).
A Royal Crown Derby bone china teapot designed by Salvador Dali, circa 1939, the body painted in enamels with a design depicting pink gloved hands and trailing foliage against a dark blue ground, with gilt highlights, the cover with oval finial, printed factory marks, 'ROYAL CROWN DERBY' and 'MADE IN ENGLAND', date code 'II' for 1939.Notes: the original teapot from which this is copied is held in the V&A Collections; it was part of a unique tea service commissioned from Royal Crown Derby by the poet, artist and patron of Surrealism, Edward James, for his extraordinary Surrealist house Monkton. In 1936 Salvador Dali stayed with Edward James at his London home, where they developed a number of ideas for surrealist objects and furniture. In a previously unknown correspondence between Edward James and the decorating firm, Green and Abbott from 1938, the 'pink glove tea set' is mentioned in the same context as the famous torso chest of drawers, the lobster telephone and the Mae West Lips sofa, all of which are known to have been conceived by Dali. It is highly likely that Green & Abbott also adapted an original motif by Dali and supplied it to the manufactory for use on a standard porcelain service. [credit to collections.vam.ac.uk]
