(Großbritannien).Eine weitere Version der Schlafenden befindet sich in Privatbesitz und ist auf dem Cover von Leonard Robinsons Biographie von William Etty abgebildet (vgl. L. Robinson, William Etty: The Life and Art, Jefferson und London 2011). Dieses Werk scheint eine erste, noch mehr skizzenhaft ausgeführte Version zu sein, deren Hintergrunds-Elemente unvollendet sind. Dagegen ist das vorliegende Bild vollständiger in der Komposition und genauer ausgeführt. Im linken Vordergrund sind Stillleben-Elemente hinzugefügt.Die Pose der Figur hat Etty von dem sogenannten „schlafenden Hermaphroditus“ oder „Borghese Hermaphroditus“ übernommen, einer berühmten Marmorskulptur aus dem antiken Rom, die eine verlorene hellenistische Bronze nachbildet (Musée du Louvre, Paris). Interessanterweise hat Etty in der vorliegenden Version den Rücken des weiblichen Modells stärker abgeflacht, um seine Aktdarstellung eher der berühmten Skulptur entsprechen zu lassen.

Mixed media painting on paper made with acrylics, charcoals, and gold leaf application by artist Gabriela Juarez. It depicts an curvaceous nude woman on a sofa set in an intimate interior. A large abstracted green vase with pink flowers partially hides the central subject. Juarez has traveled extensively in Latin America where she finds inspiration by the evocative nature of the everyday object. My still-lifes attempt to convey this sensuality.
