Numerous ring marks and some staining. Five of knob handles with section missing. Table structurally ok with general scuffs, small repairs and scratches consistent with age. 131218

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) for Finmar Ltd - a 1930s model 544 three-seater Paimio sofa, having bent ply arms and central support, upholstered in green herringbone fabric, labelled 'Finmar Ltd' and stamped 'Aalto Design Made in Finland' to underside of one arm, w.165cm. 161 x 62 x 84cm.1930s.Upholstery appears original.No noticeable losses or tears, but some fraying o bottom front edge where separated from hessian underside.Springs to base and back support are largely shot and require repairs.Right arm support is completely removed from frame.Some darkening of patina and further wear & tear to right support.Lamination to frame is generally good and complete.Timber areas are scuffed and scratched, with general age and use wear throughout.

†HRH Princess Margaret, hand written signed letter on Buckingham Palace headed paper from Princess Margaret to Sharman Douglas dated 27th June 1949 with original envelope marked by hand. Thanking her for dinner. it was so nice to see dear Mr Kaye again. I woke up this morning and thought with horror how I could have been brave enough to have sung in front of all those frightfully professional people! With a slight shudder i remember how I'd sung every song and grew more and more nervous as my recollections of the evening grew clearer! My only solace was the memory of Robert Montgomery rolling on the sofa kicking his legs in the air!Sharman Douglas (1928 - 1996) was an American socialite known for her friendship with the British royal family, in particular Princess Margaret. Mr Kaye was of course the entertainer Danny Kaye.She was the only daughter of chemicals heiress and philanthropist Peggy Zinsser (d. 1992) and politician Lewis W. Douglas (d. 1974) who served as Arizona congressman, director of the Bureau of the Budget from 1933 until 1934, and U. S. ambassador to the Court of St. James's from 1947 until 1950.
