A FINE AND RARE GEORGE III CARVED GILTWOOD CONFIDANTE SOFA IN THE MANNER OF WILLIAM & JOHN LINNELL, IN THE FRENCH NEO-CLASSICAL TASTE, CIRCA 1780 117cm high, 323cm wide, 82cm deep Provenance: Almost certainly acquired by either the 5th, 6th or 7th Viscount Powerscourt and by descent at Powerscourt, until the house was sold with the contents to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Slazenger in 1961. Sold the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Slazenger, Powerscourt, Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow, Ireland (Christie's House Sale), 24 -2 5 September 1984, lot 682 (as a Louis XVI canape à encoigneurs).Photographed in situ in Powerscourt, circa 1890. Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits The gilding has been refreshed, with areas of the underlying bole showing The upholstery is in good, clean condition, with some very minor areas of scuffs and marks The underside of the sofa with some replacement rails, later supporting brackets and supporting beams (see all images) Dreweatts is unable to comment on the originality of some of the gilded sections to the sofa, including the legs Various old tack holes to the underside from previous upholstery.
