The Zebra like stripes of the timber, combined with brass inlay, helped to earn the firm royal patronage and private commissions, becoming one of the most famous cabinet makers in Regency London. In 1801 the Journal des Luxus und der Moden speaks of 'everyone of taste and discrimination making their purchases at Oakley's, the most tasteful of London's cabinet'.The use of calamander, triple line brass inlay and six point brass inlaid stars with circular ebony centres are all features seen on Oakley's recorded work.See Margaret Jourdain, Regency Furniture, p.51, 'From a manuscript inventory of the furniture supplied by George Oakley in 1810 for Papworth Hall, Cambridgeshire...the account includes the more important pieces ... A KILIM UPHOLSTERED SOFABY GEORGE SMITH, LATE 20TH CENTURYWith makers plaque to underside81cm high, 192cm wide, 101cm deep overall Provenance: Lockerley Hall, HampshireCondition Report: With marks, knocks, scratches, abrasions consistent with age, handling, cleaning and everyday useSeat depth (front of cushion set to roughly where back cushion starts) is approximately 67cm, Ground clearance- ie floor to underside of front rail 15cmOverall in good relatively unused condition, some mild hoover scuff marks to legs, the front 'frieze' beneath the cushions is sun faded as is the front section of the cushions than remainder (see additional images) Small spots but these may be more related to the kelim than use. some seperation between elements of the kilim, mainly only noticeably to the arms, as typically seen with kilims. Slight typical kelim fabric/textile smell. There is a stitched area of repair towards the top of the left arm and the the adjacent side panel of the sofa. To the right side panel of the sofa there is a relatively short shaped line of stitched repair with pale thread. All of these repairs are immediately detectable (see additional images)Some surface dirt/ deposits. Careful cleaning would remove these.
