A New General Atlas of Modern Geography Consisting of a Complete collection of Maps of the four quarters of the globe..., circa 1840, calligraphic title printed in black and green, contents list printed in blue, two engraved plates of celestial diagrams and comparison details and 39 (complete as list) engraved maps (including 28 double-page and folding) all with contemporary outline colouring, contents disbound and loose, a few maps with marginal fraying and chipping to the foredge, slight spotting and dust soiling throughout but largely confined to the margins, contemporary half morroco, heavily worn, stained and frayed, folio QTY: (1)NOTE:Sold as a collection of maps, not subject to return.
* Earlom (Richard). The Exhibition of the Royal Academy of painting in the Year 1771 [and] The Inside of the Pantheon in Oxford Road, Robert Sayer, 1772, a pair of mezzotints after Charles Brandoin, both with near-contemporary hand-colouring, the second described item has the title repeated in French, each approximately 470 x 565 mm, uniformly mounted, framed and glazedQTY: (2)NOTE:BM satires 5091. The Pantheon was a highly fashionable place of public entertainment on the south side of Oxford Street which was designed by James Wyatt. Charles Burney stated that "The Pantheon is regarded both by natives and foreigners as the most elegant structure in Europe, if not on the globe......No person of taste in architecture or music, who remembers the Pantheon, its exhibitions, its numerous, splendid and elegant assemblies, can hear it mentioned without a sigh." The building was all but destroyed by fire in 1792 and although rebuilt it never regained its former popularity. It was finally demolished in 1937 and a Marks and Spencer store now stands on the site.
