ENGLISH SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURYVANITAS PORTRAIT OF THE MEDIUM AND ALCHEMIST EDWARD KELLEYseated full length at a table by a witch and her familiar (a cat), with inscription lower left Laski Magician on a globe and on the fore-edge of a book The Lyar`s Regulator, distemper on nine elm (?) boards (hinged at the centre), arched top, c195 x 249cm, contemporary bolection moulded frame with lossThe medium extremely fragile with numerous areas of flaking/missing paint. Shrinkage cracks between the boards but entirely original and unrestored, areas of woodworm evident on the reverse, the boards with the original horizontal bracing bars (one incomplete), the original rusted iron butterfly hinges and two substantial forged rings for suspension, original and complete. This lot is to be moved solely at the purchaser`s risk Further extensive details are available from Mellors & Kirk on requestEdward Kelley was closely associated with Dr John Dee (1527-1608) the extraordinary English Renaissance magus, mathematician and performer of “marvellous actes and feates.” Kelley was born in Worcester in 1555, educated at Oxford and for a time went by the name of Edward Talbot. From 1582-89 he practised cabalist theurgy or angelic conferences in Enochian, the ‘angelic’ language that he and Dee claimed to have received from angels. Before acting as Dee’s scryer or medium, Kelley had served another magus, Thomas Allen, in whose house he may have acquired a knowledge of esoteric philosophies. He was certainly well versed in Agrippa’s De occulta philosophia by the time of their meeting. Kelley may well have duped the “pious but credulous” Dee for his own unscrupulous ends. P J French (John Dee, The World of an Elizabethan Magus, 1972) also points out that from reading Dee’s minutes of conversations with the angel Uriel, there is little doubt Kelley was mentally unstable and that he really did think he saw angel visitants. There is considerable further research on this lot available from Mellors & Kirk on request.

Long. rouleau : 26,5 cm. Haut. 10, Long. 60, Larg. 24 cm. Haut. totale 65 cm.
