A MODERN WALL MOUNTED CLOCK WITH ATLAS CARRYING THE GLOBE DETAIL

We thank Professor Nicola Spinosa for his collaboration on the attribution of these artworks. Very important pair of large oil paintings on canvas, together with 18th C italian giltwood period frames. Framed measurements: 165 x 243, canvas measurements: 143 x 219 cm (each). Where we see, a carpet covering a table in the left corner where rest, respectively, a globe, an oval portrait, a sculpture, various books, a planetarium, a table clock and a world map, and another in which the viewer You can see the armor of a complete knight resting on the same table covered with a carpet, and, next to it, a jug, both inside separate Caprices. Work typically associated with the artistic canons of the Italian Baroque that directly connects with similar models of the famous painter of the Roman school Francesco Noletti, called il Maltese and born in Valletta, Malta (Valletta? c. 1611-Rome, 1654) Noletti was an Italian Baroque painter, born as his nickname indicates, in Malta and specialized in still life painting. Noletti's still lifes have been attributed to the so-called Francesco Fieravino or Fioravanti, a confused creation of the 18th century, until, in the early 2000s, his true identity was discovered from an anonymous portrait kept at the Foundation for International Studies of La Valletta, in the building of the old university. His biography shows that around 1640 or something before he settled in Rome, where he married and collaborated with Andrea Sacchi, and died there on December 4, 1654. The death certificate he called him a "famous painter". Although his last name was soon forgotten, he was praised, always by his nickname, by Cornelis de Bie and Joachim von Sandrart and later also by Joshua Reynolds, among several others. In the absence of signed works, two engravings published in 1703 by Jacobus Coelemans on paintings by the Maltese, entitled Omnis salus in ferro est and Quaedam sensum instrumenta, have served as the basis for establishing his style, in which some elements are repeated.5 His Rich still lifes are always characterized by the presence of Turkish rugs, tapestries and curtains covering the tables and shelves on which rest pieces of crockery, flowers and fruit arranged next to some precious object, musical instruments and framed paintings or mirrors. Three still lifes by the Maltese master are preserved in the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, where they entered in the 1920s with attributions to Antonio de Pereda and Pieter Boel. Provenance: important Spanish private collection.

Bernard van Someren (1572-1632) - Salvator Mundi - RRR Jesus Christ, half-length, with right hand raised in blessing and resting his right hand on a globe surmounted by a cross. Signed and lettered around the impression: "Bernaerdus de Seumeren fe. et ex. a Bos." and "Ego Svm Via Veritas et Vita". First plate of a series of Christ with The Apostles and St Paul. Extremely rare engraving by the Flemish, Antwerp born artist Bernard van Someren (1572-1632). Only three engravings known to Hollstein, including a Saint Jude similar to our print. This one unknown to Hollstein. diameter 14,50 cm Very good inked early impression with nice plate tone, on fragmentary watermarked laid paper. The print is on a little square sheet of 18,00 by 18,50 cm and has full plate border and wide margins. Margins occasionally soiled but in a nice authentic untouched condition. Hollstein unknown ----- In counterpart to the series by Zacharias Dolendo after Jacques de Gheyn II from 1596. --- This design of Christ as Salvator Mundi was apparently used for the ceiling decoration from the supposed Guise Palace, Edinburgh; see Michael Bath, 'Was there a Guise Palace in Edinburgh?', in Robert Gowing and Robyn Pender (eds), 'All Manner of Murals: The History, Techniques and Conservation of Secular Wall Paintings', London, 2007, pp.11-21, fig.3. The house was demolished in 1845 but the panel survives in the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. ----- Barend van Someren (1572–1632) was a Flemish painter and printmaker who after training and working in Antwerp moved to Rome. He was also active as an art dealer, publisher and innkeeper. Van Someren was born in Antwerp and the brother of Paul van Somer I. He trained in his hometown with Filips Lisaert the Younger. He traveled to Rome in 1600 were he worked in the workshop of Aert Mijtens. He left Rome for Amsterdam in 1602 and operated an inn in Amsterdam. The Flemish painter Adriaen Brouwer stayed in this inn when he first arrived in the Dutch Republic in 1625. He is reported to have painted history and landscape paintings bu no extant paintings by him are known. A few prints by his hand are portraits of religious and historical figures such as the Judas Taddeüs. Engraving 1590-1630 260

Angels around her with symbols of the seven liberal arts. Above her head a dove (or heart with wings). Below four lines of Latin. This interesting design was made by Hendrick Goltzius and is signed bottom left 'HG Invent'. The engraving is attributed to his workshop and should be dated circa 1586-1590. 22,00 x 15,80 cm A good impression on a full sheet of watermarked laid paper with full plate border and margins. This is one from a series of plates showing the festivals and ceremonies given to Marie de Medici by the city of Amsterdam during her visit from 31 August to 5 September 1638. Engraved by Pieter Nolpe after the designs Nicolaes Moyaert, published by Blaeu in 1638 in Kaspar van Baerle's work on the festivities 'Medicea Hospes'.
