MACROBIUS, Ambrosius Aurelius Theodosius. Macrobii in somnium Scipionis ex Ciceronis. VI. libro de rep. eruditissima explanatio. Eiusdem Saturnaliorum libri VII. Venice, heirs of Aldo Manuzio and Andrea Torresano, April 1528In-8vo, 165 x 105 mm. Full smooth vellum binding of 17th century with coat of arms on the center of covers. Gilt title on Morocco label on spine. Blue edges. Gilt princely coat of arms on covers with an helmet surmounted by a shield with lion and eagle; Handwritten note on titlepage: “ex-libris Joh. Baptista Axolij 1646”. Leaves [16], 322, [2]. Collation: [*]8 of which 7 and 8 are blank leaves, a-z8, &8, A-Q8, R4 with leaf R3 blank. Italic, roman and Greek type. 8 black woodcut diagrams in the text including a zodiac diagram, all in accordance with Macrobius' precepts recommending the use of images to convey knowledge. On leaf k5(r) a half-page map of the globe with a representation of the winds (for Greenland we find the word Thila), in a way, brings together Neoplatonic knowledge by dividing the earth into five distinct climatic zones with the inhabited world north of the Equator, to the south there is an imaginary continent, the Antipodes, which is supposed to balance the continental masses, making it the first map to depict a southern continent. Complete specimen of the four blank maps in very good condition. The first and only rare Aldine edition of these three astronomical treatises of considerable importance, two by Macrobius and the third by Censorinus, which report alternative conceptions to the Ptolemaic Vulgate. Scipio's Dream, which forms the bulk of the sixth book of Cicero's De Republica, is perhaps the best known passage because, unlike the rest of the work, it has come down to us virtually intact. It was Macrobius' commentary on this Dream that allowed the transmission of Cicero's text: if the commentary itself contained only excerpts, later copyists included the entire text in their manuscripts. In the Commentary on Scipio's Dream, Macrobius, born around 370 in Sicca in Numidia, deals with the soul and the constitution of the universe by giving a Neo-Platonic interpretation of a famous passage from Cicero's Republic. The Saturnalia is a philosophical dialogue on history, mythology, literature and science. The edition also contains the only treatise that has come down to us from Censorinus, a Latin grammarian of the 3rd century: De die natali, which contains valuable insights into both the customs of the Romans, dealing with the birth and life of man, days, months, years, religious rites, etc., and the state of science at the time, with considerations of chronology, astronomy, natural history and music. This is the first Aldine impression of Censorino's work; Aldo the Younger gave a new edition, annotated by him, in 1581.Adams, M-62; Brunet, III, 1286; Houzeau/Lancaster 1055 & 1046; Renouard, p. 165, n° 2; Sander 4080; Texas 228 (from the library of Derwent Coleridge); The Aldine Press, cat. 251; UCLA, 251; USTC, 839413; Cfr. The Mapping of The World, cat. 13.

Bland and Sons .22lr converted rook rifle, serial number 16749, originally a .297/250 but now converted to .22lr with Birmingham proof marks, 28inch octagonal barrel, fitted with folding barley corn and globe front sight, side lever action requires attention, the tang drilled to fit a A. G. Parker folding peep sight.UK FIREARMS LICENCE WITH .22 RIFLE VARIATION OR RFD REQUIRED. 109cm long The gun is partway through restoration. The mainspring is either a replacement still needing fettling or the original that has not been fitted back into place correctly. Either way, it currently does not fit and will not allow the action to operate or the top tang (which has been drilled for a rear sight fitting) to be screwed home. The barrel has lost its original rear sight and has been retrofitted with scope mounts. The front sight is slightly loose. The bore has some pitting marks scattered throughout but still has plenty of usable reasonably crisp rifling left.  The metal finish has worn with only tiny traces of original bluing left. There is the odd dent and scratch mark to the metal and a very small area of the breech area of the barrel that has a small vice jaw mark. The stock appears in good form with dents and marks but no splits or repairs.

Lot 33

Thomas Turner .451 percussion muzzle loading rifle, 32inch barrel secured by two bands, fitted with a globe front sight, the rear sight lacking, the lock engraved with maker name and address, the stock fitted with steel furniture. The bore has the furry corroded look that the exterior of the gun carries. The patches of corrosion do cover portions of the rifling however from what can be seen, there looks to be fairly crisp rifling still present. The crown is in good state. The rear sight and ramrod are missing altogether. The action works with a strong positive mainspring. The barrel bands are loose. The stock is free from splits or repairs, there are some dents, scratches, and marks as well as some speckled paint spots.
