NO RESERVE Broadside.- Pigeon Fancying.- Colombarian Society, listing both the articles of an unidentified society and the standards required of birds for show, marginal browning, some spotting and soiling, folds, with closed tears, minor loss at 1 corner, folio, the articles dated April 1st 1800, the standards dated April 6th 1802.⁂Both the date of the piece offered here and the clear focus on the showing of Almond Tumblers suggest very strongly that it was issued by the first Columbarian Society to have been established, the society to which the pastime of pigeon fancying (and the many societies since established worldwide) owe their parentage. The Columbarian Society was formed in 1750, and first met at the Globe in Fleet Street: its members were principally concerned with breeding and showing Almond Tumblers: to satisfy an interest in breeding other species the rival Feather Club was established in 1825.
