A pair of Chinese blue and white floral bottle vases, Kangxi, of globe and shaft form, painted scrolling foliage, underglaze 'G' mark under, 20cm high/Note: A similar pair of vases were sold in the Gerson and Judith Leiber collection, Sotheby's, 20th March 2018, Lot 405. The distinctive G mark has been the subject of speculation. Thought by some to be the initial of a western client who commissioned the items, it has also been suggested that it is a D copied erroneously from Delftwares. A third suggestion is to view the character (when turned through 90 degrees) as the Persian letter ye. Perhaps these wares were produced for a Persian or Mughal Indian patron/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: The pair are generally in nice condition. Each has a few scattered dimples to the glaze. One has a small firing hole/flaw in the glaze by the 'G' mark. The same vase has a tiny black flaw to the rim of the neck.
