Photographs.- An extraordinary collection of c.500 photographs of steam engines, many large format images as produced by many manufacturers throughout the second half of the nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth, depicting mostly nineteenth century engines, many albumen prints, most c.300 c.220 x 370mm. (or larger) or c.200 c.220 x 32mm. (or slightly smaller), loose in 4 old cloth portfolios with ties, arranged by railway line rather than manufacturer (LMS, LNER, Southern), rubbed, folio, [c.1859-1950].⁂ The original collector appears to have been a senior officer of Beyer and Peacock, and many of the images bear their design studio stamp on the reverse, sometimes dated many years after the photograph was taken, but nevertheless these are vintage prints clearly held in stock by the firm. The noted Manchester photographer James Mudd was the house photographer, many of the enclosed are from his studio. The collection has many quirky and interesting engines and some of the Beyer-Garratt type, and many that were sent overseas to all corners of the globe, especially to Australia.

Ed Vebell (American, 1921 - 2018) "Panama Canal Opens" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for Epic Events in American History series issued in 1985. Much of the early exploration of the American coast -- both North and South -- was undertaken in the attempt to find a way to the fabled riches of the Indies. The dream of an inland passage was never to be realized; yet as nineteenth century technology and imperialism shrank the globe, dreamers turned their attention to a Central American canal. The first to make the attempt was Ferdinand de Lesseps -- of Suez Canal fame -- who formed a French company and won a concession from the Columbian government to start digging. Disease, poor management and bad luck halted the project in 1889. French financiers soon formed the New Panama Canal Company -- not to dig a canal, but to sell Lesseps' concession to the highest bidder. Emerging as a world power, the United States took the bait, and in 1903 Columbia and the United States drafted the Hay-Herran Treaty. In the end, Columbia refused to ratify the treaty. Rumors that the Canal Company might make a deal with Russia or England, the impetuosity of President Theodore Roosevelt, and a convenient revolt in Panama City all conspired to win recognition of independence for Panama and a canal for the United States. Carving out a canal forty miles through the disease ridden jungles of the isthmus was an engineering feat of great daring. Much of the credit goes to Colonel George W. Goethals of the Army Corps of Engineers and to Dr. William C. Gorgas for the eradication of yellow fever and malaria. The Panama Canal opened to traffic on August 15, 1914. Image Size: 19.75 x 20.75 in. Overall Size: 26.25 x 27.5 in. Unframed. (B05574)
Ed Vebell (American, 1921 - 2018) "Steamboat Race" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for Epic Events in American History series issued in 1985. Although legend and romance surround the era of the Clipper Ships and their races around the globe, no mode of transportation has so enthralled the American people as the steamboat -- especially the paddlewheelers, replete with gamblers and southern belles, that piled the Mississippi. For some fifty years steamboats, with the slender smokestacks and columned decks, carried trade and travellers up and down the mighty "Father of Waters," and along its giant tributaries. While cardsharks preyed on unwary plantation owners returning home from successful trading in New Orleans, there was money to be made by everyone from the frequent races between boats. Faster and faster the great paddlewheels churned: in 1815 it took 25 days to go from New Orleans to St. Louis; by 1853 the time was whittled down to four days, nine hours. The most fabled race of all took place in 1870 when the Robert E. Lee made the trip in three days, eighteen hours, fourteen minutes, defeating its rival the Natchez by over three hours. All America, and some of Europe, too, participated in the betting as telegraphs flashed reports of the progress of the two boats. Over ten thousand people lined the shore at Memphis as they passed. The most fabled race was, indeed, almost the last race. The expansion of the railroads after the Civil War doomed the steamboat to near extinction on inland waters, though its successors survive and flourish on the Great Lakes even today. Image Size: 20 x 20.75 in. Overall Size: 26.5 x 26.25 in. Unframed. (B05545)
