For a young man, rising in the world, to fall in love, to give himself up to soft desires, is to stop short on his very career to glory'; a letter headed New York, 11 January 1846, 'My dear uncle, It is with truly unpleasant feelings that I now address you but through the most unfortunate circumstance I am really obliged to have recourse to solicit your assistance...in this part of the Globe I am indeed reduced to the greatest distress and I am in such a forlorn condition that I am ashamed in letting you know exactly my state. I am now obliged to go to Bellevieu [Bellevue] Hospital & alms house, address James Graham, care of the Gate Keeper, Bellvieu Hospital & alms house, New York'. A 16th-century terrestrial globe by, or a derivative of, Francois Demongenet (active 1550-60). 12 engraved gores; stippled effect to the seas with several monsters and ships; one cartouche, only the edges of which are visible (there is a depiction of Triton or a merman holding a woman where a second, right-hand cartouche features in some gores by Demongenet); no signature in the plate; Japan is called 'Sipannge'; Australia is part of a southern land mass called 'Terra Incognita' ("unknown land"), and is empty; there are islands near Java called 'Gryforum Insule'; North America is marked 'Devicta ann 1530'; South America is marked 'Nova Terra Inventa anno 1492' and 'Canibales Tropophagi'. The globe has general toning and rubbed/worn areas from handling, some small chips and cracks, and signs of old restoration, which is most pronounced at the cartouche. A very fine and rare early 19th century large English skeleton clock with world time indicationBarraud, Cornhill, LondonThe clock designed as a globe on a turned column set on three folding cabriole legs, each terminating in a knurled levelling screw at the foot, the horizon ring 10 inches in diameter and surmounted with a signed arc set with gilt East and West indicators, the time shown by two rays emanating from the gilt brass sun mounted centrally between horizontal chapter rings for Arabic minutes (0-60) and Roman hours (marked for a full 24 hour period, twice I-XII), over a 360 degree band, the silvered Equator band engraved with a remarkable list of nearly one hundred place names or reference points, each positioned to mark the time difference between itself and London (see full list below).The twin chain fusee movement with pierced plates united by turned pillars set within the 'Southern hemisphere', (the upper plate larger than the lower so as to fit inside the curved lower part), both trains with skeletonised spring barrels to a chain fusee, the going terminating in a horizontal deadbeat 'scape wheel visible on the top plate, the polished steel rack strike work also visible on the top plate activating the hammer and bell mounted on the underside. Running and striking. Set on the original ebonised circular plinth with brass locating points for the levelling screws, under the original glass dome. Further set on a 19th/early 20th century (?) reeded mahogany pedestal. Together with the possibly original winding key with bespoke elongated steel shank. 1.65m (5ft 5ins) high in total.
