PANKHURST (CHRISTABEL)Two autograph letters signed with initials ('C.P.') to Ethel Smyth ('My dear Ethel'), the first outlining her mother's speaking plans ('...Llanelly, Carmarthenshire on Friday night...') and commenting on the French and Swedish promises of a measure of electoral reform ('W.S. [Women's Suffrage] is creeping across the face of the globe...'); the second sending a letter by Mrs Ayrton on Marie Curie ('...I have strongly the impression that in France the woman who works in new fields is the target for all sorts of spiteful, evil accusations...'), 8 pages, light dust-staining, 8vo (205 x 128mm.), 4 Clement's Inn, Strand, W.C., 16 and 17 January [19]11; two typed letters signed ('Christabel Pankhurst'), the first to Sir William Bull regarding Dickinson's Bill; the second to Spencer Wilkinson responding to his comments on an article on the suffragette ('...I felt...the writing of it to be a duty... the article expresses a view which is widely shared...'), with envelope, 3 pages, 4to (255 x 205mm.), London and Paris, 19 March 1908 and 10 August 1915; with another letter written on her behalf by Elsie Bowerman (4)Footnotes:'W.S. IS CREEPING ACROSS THE FACE OF THE GLOBE': Christabel Pankhurst on the support for women's suffrage in Europe and speaks of her Anti-German feeling.Ethel Smyth, the composer of the suffragette anthem March of the Women (see the Music lot in the present sale) was a close friend (some suggest lover) of Emmeline Pankhurst and was in the inner circle of the WSPU. Christabel spent several years in France, having fled there after a warrant was issued for her arrest on a charge of conspiracy to commit damage in March 1912 and, during her sojourn in Paris, obtained help from Smyth who gave her an introduction to Winaretta Singer, Princesse de Polignac, with whom Smyth had had an affaire. Christabel ran the WSPU from Paris until September 1914, returning to London on the outbreak of World War I when all suffragette prisoners were given unconditional release. She roundly supported the declaration of war with Germany and on 8 September 1914 gave a speech entitled 'The German Peril' and believed that internment should be used against suspicious foreign nationals and supported the conscription of men into the armed forces and women into industry.Whilst France had their own Union of Women's Suffrage (the UFSF), they took a much more moderate approach than their British counterparts and the right of women to vote was only granted in 1945. Other European women were to be granted the vote, although limited in some places, throughout the course of the 1920's.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
