Newton, of twelve hand-coloured and engraved gores, inscribed 'NEWTON'S New and Improved TERRESTRIAL GLOBE, Acurately delineated from the observations of the most esteemed Navigators and Travellers To the Present Time, MANUFACTURED BY J. & W. Newton, No. 66. Chancery Lane, London Published 1818 with additions to 1823', with two brass engraved hour dials and a meridian ring, with an engraved horizon, the mahogany stand inlaid with ebonised stringing, with a spiral reeded stem on swept tripod legs and scroll feet united by turned stretchers, centred with a glazed compass with a steel needle, on brass castors, 102cm high.
A French Charles X gilt and patinated bronze mantel clock, the eight day brass drum movement with an outside countwheel and striking on a bell, with silk suspension, stamped 'GG 2131', with a pastille 'Lons Medaille D'Or 1827', with a silvered circular dial with Roman numerals, the case modelled with a figure of Christopher Columbus seated on rocks, with a globe, a map and an anchor, above a lappet and scroll decorated base, 42.8cm high.
ROSE ALEC: (1908-1991) English Sailor who participated in the second single-handed Atlantic race in 1964 and circumnavigated the globe single-handedly in 1967-68. A turquoise woolen knit cap with a yellow stripe around the base and yellow 'bobble' on the top, being the knit cap worn by Rose during his round the world voyage on Lively Lady. Accompanied by an A.L.S., Alec R Rose, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to Mr. Howard, stating, in part, 'It was nice to meet you at Lymington and to see you had my woolley hat. This hat I was wearing constantly during my round the world voyage, and was wearing it on my return to Southsea'. Also including a book signed, being a hardback edition of My Lively Lady, First Standard Edition published by the Nautical Publishing Company in association with George G. Harrap & Company Ltd., Lymington & London, 1968. Signed and dated by Rose to the title page. Accompanied by the dustjacket, and further including an unsigned 5 x 6.5 photograph of Rose standing in a three quarter length pose. The knit cap is a little faded and frayed, particularly at the top where the 'bobble' has become loose, the letter and photograph are both laid down and the former has some wrinkling and staining, affecting the text and signature (which remain legible), the book is in fine condition.
