A silver Roman Republican denarius issued by the moneyer M Mettius under Julius Caesar, dating to c. 44 BC. Obverse: IMP CAESAR, laureate head of Caesar right, lituus and simpulum behind. Reverse: [M MET]TIVS, Venus standing left with palladium and sceptre, resting left arm on shield set atop globe. Mint of Rome. RRC 480/3. Worn, but scarce. About Fair. A mixed lot of three copper-alloy Roman 'nummi'. Represented in this group, BEATA TRANQVILLITAS (globe on altar inscribed VOTIS XX) reverse of Crispus as Caesar, SARMATIA DEVICTA (Victory advancing right kicking seated captive) reverse of Constantine I and a SALVS REIPVBLICAE (Salus standing left holding two children) issue of Fausta. All from the mint of Trier. Condition: Fine to Nearly Very Fine.Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.
A silver siliqua of Magnus Maximus (AD 383-388) dating to c. AD 383-388. Obverse: DN MAG MAX-IMVS PF AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: VIRTVS RO-MANORVM, Roma enthroned facing, head left, holding inverted spear and globe. Mintmark: -//TRPS. Mint of Trier. RIC vol. IX, p. 29, no. 84b. Deep striking crack extends across more than half the coin. Scarce. Fair to Fine. Weight: 1.68g. Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.

Weight: Provenance: from the collection of an ex metal detectorist, found Oxfordshire/Berkshire/Hampshire in the 1980s or 1990s.
A silver denarius struck for Vindex during the revolt in Gallia Ludugensis from March-May of AD 68. Obverse: SALVS GENERIS HVMANI, Victory standing right on globe, holding wreath and palm. Reverse: inscription SP.QR inside corona civica, gem at apex. Gallic mint. RIC vol. I, no. 73b. Very Fine, some encrustation to reverse. Weight: 2.67g.Discussion: Gaius Julius Vindex was the governor of Gallia Ludugensis, instituted a rebellion against Nero in AD 68 in an effort to have him deposed. Supporting the imperatorial claim of Servius Sulpicius Galba (the governor of Hispania Tarraconensis), Vindex gave battle against forces loyal to Nero-but was defeated and subsequently committed suicide. Despite this setback Galba would become emperor later in AD 68 (if only for nine months), the latter issuing coins in commemoration of Vindex-to whom in part he owed his position.Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.

A gold Visigothic solidus struck in the name of Libius Severus/Severus III (AD 461-465), dating to c. AD 461-465. Obverse: DN LIBIVS SEV-RVS AVG (reversed 'N'), diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: VICTORI-A AVGGG, Emperor standing facing in military attire, holding long jewelled cross and globe- right foot on man-headed serpent. Mintmark: R/A//COMOB. Probably struck in Gaul, prototype mint of Ravenna. RIC vol. X, p. 459, no. 3754. Very rare. Flan crack at about 10 o'clock on the obverse face. Otherwise, Very Fine. Weight: 4.2g. Provenance: found Rettendon, Essex. Recorded on the PAS as OXON-5E3E68.
