Collier uses carefully arranged objects to remind the viewer of the transience of life: the hourglass, skull and bubbles remind us of the inevitability of death. However, the ivy and globe signify eternal life and the resurrection. The inscriptions which appear in Latin in the present painting underscore that meaning and stress the transitional nature of life: HOMO EST/SIMILIS/ BULLAE (man is a bubble) and SIC FUGITT./IRRE.PARABILE/TEMUS' (it escapes, irretrievable time).A similar composition, signed and dated 1663, was with Johnny van Haeften, London, March 1983 and is now in the Heinz Collection, Washington.Dr. Fred Meijer confirmed the attribution to Collier at the time of the 1998 sale. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

DALMORE 12 YEAR OLD KYNDAL HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT 40% ABV / 70cl Dalmore have worked hard to position themselves as one of the world's foremost luxury whisky brands. Of course, a premium brand needs a premium product, and thankfully, Dalmore’s spirit lives up to the hype. They have a complicated distillation process that utilises mismatched stills to produce distillates with different characteristics. These are then vatted together, before being filled into the distillery’s preferred Sherry casks, all under the watchful eye (and discerning nose) of their legendary Master Distiller, Richard Paterson. Born into the world of French jewellery design, Georges Lenfant quickly mastered his trade, undertaking apprenticeships and studying jewellery design in both Paris and abroad. In 1900, he established his own workshop at 47 rue des Petits-Champs, just minutes away from the jewellery houses of Place Vendôme and Rue de la Paix. By 1903, his exceptional work was already recognized, earning him a listing in the Revue de la Bijouterie, Joaillerie, Orfevrerie.Lenfant’s designs, celebrated for their creative brilliance and flawless execution, attracted attention from the leading jewellery houses of the day, including OJ Perrin, Cartier, Mellerio dits Meller, and Van Cleef & Arpels. Determined to establish his own identity, Georges created a maker's mark in 1909, ensuring his pieces stood apart. In the period following World War II, Georges Lenfant continued to innovate, expanding further with the acquisition of Verger Frères. This partnership led to an exciting collaboration with Vacheron Constantin, producing exquisite timepieces and jewellery, including designs for Hermès. Jacques, who succeeded his father in the 1960s, infused the brand with a renewed focus on goldsmithing, creating beautifully textured pieces that celebrated the versatility of gold. One of his signature designs was the interlocking chain motif, which resulted in over 3,000 unique pieces, now considered some of the most iconic works of the Georges Lenfant legacy.Much like O.J. Perrin, a pillar of Parisian luxury under the direction of Ralph Aljord, Georges Lenfant has built a lasting legacy in the world of fine jewellery. The two houses have collaborated in the past, creating exquisite pieces that combine elegant details with innovative design. These creations perfectly exemplify a commitment to exceptional craftsmanship, personalized design, and the seamless blending of timeless elegance with contemporary flair. After a short career in law, he was quickly attracted to the theatre and became a student of poet and playwright Ben Jonson. Beaumont's first work was Salmacis and Hermaphroditus, in 1602 and by 1605, Beaumont had written commendatory verses to Volpone one of Ben Jonson's masterpieces. Soon after, he met John Fletcher and together they formed one of the most dynamic and productive of writing teams that English theatre has ever produced. In 1609, the two collaborated in earnest on Philaster. The play was performed by the King's Men at the Globe Theatre and at Blackfriars. It was a great success. Their careers were now well and truly launched and into the bargain they had ignited and captured a public taste for tragicomedy. There is an account that at the time the two men shared everything. They lived together in a house on the Bankside in Southwark, ' they also lived together in Bankside, sharing clothes and having 'one wench in the house between them.' Or as another account puts it 'sharing everything in the closest intimacy.'This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
