Wm Berry Ph Lea. and sold at their shops at the Atlas in Cornhill at ye Globe at Chering .... and at ye Atlas & Hercules in the Poultery London', a further inscription titled 'To The Reader' in another cartouche, with images of natives, beasts, sea creatures and ships together with depictions of natives in both North and South America, the routes Drake and Candish (sic) voyages plotted, also shown are the Great Wall of China, the west coasts of Hollandia Nova (Australia) and a fragment of Zelandia Nova (New Zealand), the North West coast of America between St James Lancaster Sound and Nova Albion is not shown, the brass meridian with a graduated scale, the horizon ring with an engraved calendar, on a later stand (stand 'as found')102cm high (approx)Catalogue NoteMorden and Berry advertised a pair of large globes in 1673, as “new sizes of globes, about 15 inches in diameter, celestial and terrestrial, 4 pounds the pair’ and were only pre-dated as English globes by those by Molyneux and Moxon from the late 16th and early 17th century. While not a ‘first edition’, the globe offered here, produced by the Morden, Berry, Lea partnership, makes it a rare example of one of the earliest commercially produced English globes and shows the tracks of voyages by Drake and Cavendish which earlier versions did not.For similar globes see Royal Museum Greenwich, object id.
