Emperor, holding standard in right hand and Victory on globe in left, bound captive sat at left foot, victoria avggg around, r v in field, comob in exergue, adapted through the attachment of a small ribbed gold loop at 12 o’clock, 4.30g/6h (RIC X 3727). Very fine, retaining the original ‘Anglo-Saxon’ gold loop and extremely rare thus £300-£400 --- Provenance: Purchased in the 1970s from a Surrey Metal Detectorist and recently reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Following the withdrawal of Roman troops from Britain in 410 AD there was significant reduction in volume of coinage imported from the continent. In the late fifth and sixth centuries a small quantity of Pseudo-Imperial coinage did enter Britain. Within an Anglo-Saxon context the majority of this specie took on a non monetary function, being adapted for use as ornamental jewellery through the addition of gold loops. Such items have been found as both single finds (cf. PAS PUBLIC-25E003) and as deposits associated with early Christian burials, such as that found at St Martins (see MoE no.5, p. 23). It is plausible that they entered Britain through mechanisms of gift exchange.
