GILLOWS OF LANCASTER/WARING AND GILLOWS: FOUR ELABORATE CAST PANELS, possibly part of an exhibition stand, with a spurious founding date of 1695 and mounted with copies of awards from international exhibitions between 1851 and 1900. Originally two uprights approximately 114" x 26". See illustration. The Great Exhibition of 1851 was a remarkable ground-breaking event which set the tone for a series of international exhibitions across the globe that flourished until the early part of the 20th century, and still continue to this day. Gillows of Lancaster were one of a number of first-rate manufacturing companies to provide work of the highest calibre for these exhibitions. These elements of what must have been a large and impressive display stand of some sort include copies of the medals that Gillows were awarded at these exhibitions. From London in 1851 to Paris in 1900, there are awards from exhibitions in London, Paris and Brussels. These panels seem to date from after 1903 when the firm became Wring and Gillows, and before the First World War when the Art nouveau elements of the design might have been considered unfashionable. It is not clear exactly which event this display was created for, the years between 1903 and 1914 were rife with exhibitions, perhaps London in 1908 or Ghent in 1913. Discovered recently in storage in Liverpool, the home of Warings, it is quite possible that they have remained undisturbed for many years.
