Lot 1495

A fine and rare astronomical oak and mahogany longcase clock by Edward Harriman Workington circa 1760-1770, with broken arch pediment and tapered pillars to the hood, with oak door crossbanded in elm and with Corinthian columns, the base with canted corners crossbanded in mahogany and raised on a plinth. Dial width 13", height 18½". The arch accommodates the astronomical work. Within and below the arch is a large ring approximately 8½" in diameter. This intersects the chapter ring. The periphery is marked in degrees to show the suns position in the heavens and engraved Amplitude Occa with effigies of the sun preceding these captions. Between the outer and inner ring a rotating disc carries the sun. The disc has a blue ground and is decorated with clouds. Between the two rings are shutters which are decorated with scenes of people, buildings and horses. These rise and fall throughout the year so that the sun always rises and sets at the correct time and pointers attached to the shutters give the actual time when this occurs. The left side of the inner ring is marked in degrees to show the suns declination north or south of the equator and right side indicates the sign of the zodiac. Within the inner ring the moon rotates with a silvered scale at its periphery and below the moon two globes are depicted with fine floral engraving. Height 88" (225 cm). NOTE: Edward Harriman was born circa 1700 in the Crosby area and was married in 1729. He moved to Workington in the early 1730's and made a few special clocks with astronomical dials and globe moons. He died in Workington in 1776 (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock is currently ticking away, striking and seems to be operating as it should. All pieces of the movement appear to be present. We have both weights, the pendulum, the winding key and door key. The clock is currently keeping good time. In our opinion the movement is original to the case and the cheeks do not appear to have been modified. The pediment is finished on the return with Greek keywork also. It has never had roundels. The case is in first class condition with no issues. The doors are not warped. The colour is very good. There is no evidence of any woodworm.

He also made special clocks with astronomical dials and globe moons. He died in Workington in 1776 (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock is currently ticking away and striking when advanced. There does not appear to be any pieces missing from the movement. In our opinion the movement is original to the case and the cheeks and seatboard are original and unaltered. The case itself its in generally very good order throughout with only very minor imperfections. The trunk door is not warped. The backboards are all original. 7th-mid 6th century BC. A carved carnelian Neo-Babylonian cylinder seal with worshipping scene; a male worshipper in a globular head-dress, wearing a long, vertically-striated and fringed robe, stands facing right, pointing with his raised left hand and extending the right, palm up, towards two deities who face him; the front god, also in a globular head-dress, wearing a vertically-striated, open robe over a kilt, both fringed, raises his left hand, palm up; in the right extended he holds a double-topped mace with two balls on each end; from his back protrude three rays, each ending in a globe; between worshipper and god are above the Pleiades (but one globe absent) and below the tasselled spade (MAR / marru), the symbol of Marduk, the chief god of Babylon; right behind the god a second with a high globular head-dress seats on a throne with a high back, ending up in a ball, wearing a long fringed robe he raises his left hand, palm up, and holds in his right extended a ring of seven drill-holes; above between the both deities is a crescent; a vertical row of four stars serves as a scene separator; thus on this seal the three deities Marduk, Venus-Star and the Pleiades are worshipped; line borders at top and bottom; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. For this image cf. Collon, D. Catalogue of the Western Asiatic Seals in the British Museum. Cylinder Seals V. Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian Periods, London, 2001, pl. XIX-XX; for the row of stars as scene separator see ibid., No.234 and 238. 4.26 grams, 17mm (3/4"). Property of a London lady, part of her family's Swiss collection; formerly acquired in the 1980s. [No Reserve] Very fine condition.

Lot 265

Mid 15th-mid 14th century BC. A carved carnelian Mitannian cylinder seal with winged genius, surrounded by symbols; a winged genius, formed by a vertical line marked by globes for the head and the base of the neck, with flat headgear, stands over two fish, facing right a big bundle of rays; on the two sides are various symbols, on the left: a fly, a small crescent, a stylised hand of three globes and five horizontal strokes, a second small crescent, one above the other; right a third small crescent, an indefinable sign, consisting of four dots and two horizontal lines, a scorpion and a small ring, also one above the other; the large bundle of rays could represent an extremely modified version of the 'stylised tree', from a central globe five rays each run up and down and end in globes, two short horizontal rays, starting from the central globe and ending in circles, symbolize the lacing; the ornamentation that almost completely replaces the figurative corresponds to the preference for abstraction in the Mitannian glyptic; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. Cf. cylinder seal of Ugarit (Récent 2), almost identical to this seal, is included in H. Kühne, Das Rollsiegel in Syrien. Zur Steinschneidekunst in Syrien zwischen 3300 und 330 vor Christus, Tübingen, 1980, p.93, No.40. 3.2 grams, 20mm (3/4"). Mark Coreth , British b. 1958, Jaguar Fishing, 2018 Bronze, from an edition of 20 13cm high x 16.5cm wide x 7cm deep Similar works by this artist retail at: £3,250 Mark Coreth: Mark Coreth was born in London in 1958 and was immediately dispatched to the family farm in the Kenyan highlands where the Equator ran through the house. The idyllic childhood surrounded by exotic Flora and Fauna fostered Mark's early and continuing passion for wildlife and the sculpting of it. Mark has had no formal art school training, his ability is based quite simply on dedication and hard work coupled with an acute and perceptive eye, drawing heavily on experiences gained during his early years in Kenya, and regular sculptural safari's around the world , with his Backpack Studio . His sculptures reflect his instinctive understanding of the behaviour and physicality of the animals he sculpts. Working with extraordinary speed, if the original plasticine or clay fails to speak to him within a couple of hours Mark destroys it and starts again. He captures violence, speed, and movement , or even tranquility and pathos with deceptive ease, and is now internationally recognized as the master sculptor of the animal in motion. As well as his regular one-man exhibitions at Sladmore Contemporary Mark shows regularly in Paris, and New York. His many monumental commissions include a life-size piece of two Cheetahs in a tree for the ruling family in Dubai, a life-size figure of a boatman which sits outside Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, a shoal of rays in the Docklands and a massive 50 piece fountain at the Natural History Museum. His most spectacular commission to date has been an enormous 16 foot high life-size charging elephant; the subject of a half hour documentary on the Discovery Channel. Where the film-makers followed him on safari while he made his initial studies, back to his studio for the creation process and finally to the foundry to see the final casting of the bronze. The finished bronze elephants currently reside in a public collection in Rome and a private collection in Australia. 2015 saw him complete his life size bronze of the much loved Race Horse Frankel, commissioned by the owner Prince Khalid Abdullah. Her Majesty the Queen unveiled the first one at Royal Ascot in June, with further copies at York Race Course and the Newmarket Racing Museum to follow. Mark lives and works in deepest Dorset, where the original white plaster model of his life size charging elephant stands guard outside his studio. His latest exhibition, “ The Story in the Snow… Russia’s endangered Big Cats” opens at The Sladmore Gallery in November this year.
