Max Papart (France, 1911-1994) large cubist oil on canvas 'Playing Guitar'. Signed lower right. Titled and dated 1988 verso. Sight Size: 31.5 x 38 in. Overall Size: 35.25 x 42.25 in. Purchased from Nahan Galleries (New York City). With original gallery label verso. Influenced by such rich and varied sources as Cranach, Delacroix, Matisse, and Klee and inspired by his friend Jacques Prevert, Max Papart did work intended to open a window into a world that provokes as much thought as pleasure. Since his first one-man show in 1946, he had over 300 museum and gallery exhibitions around the globe, and is the subject of dozens of books and catalogues.

Civil War, Vindex AR Denarius. Uncertain mint in Spain or Gaul, circa AD 68. In the name and types of Augustus. Bare head of Augustus right / Capricorn right, holding rudder and globe, cornucopiae upon its back; AVGVSTVS below. RIC 82; BMCRE 46. 3.51g, 18mm, 2h. Very Fine. Slightly porous. Lightly toned. This denarius, along with other Augustus types, is recognised as having been struck during the uprising of Vindex primarily from their weight and unusual style. Whereas the denarii struck during Augustus' lifetime were made to a standard of approximately 3.8g, Neronian denarii were closer to 3.5g, this weight continuing in use through the Civil War.
