Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) und Werkstatt, zug.Virtus und Fortuna triumphieren über die Wolllust DES BACCHUSÖl auf Leinwand. Doubliert.145 x 170 cm.In barockisierendem bronzierten Rahmen.In der Komposition in Form eines Rhombus stellt der Maler die Figurengruppe in einer besonders vom Lichteinfall begünstigten Weise hervor: Es sind die Virtus mit ihrem Helm mit Federbusch und die schräg vor ihr auf der Weltenkugel mit einem Ruder und wehendem Velum sitzende Fortuna. Die beiden allegorischen Figuren reichen sich die Hand. Ihnen wird ein Lorbeerkranz und ein Zepter überreicht von einem Genius mit von Früchten gefülltem metallisch schimmerndem Füllhorn, der wiederum von zwei geflügelten Puttowesen überfangen wird. Sein Knie, sowie das der Virtus ruht auf dem Rücken des die Rhombusform komplettierenden in gewagter und doch gekonnt ausgeführter Verkürzung wiedergegebenen Bacchus, den wir gut aus anderen Gemälden von Rubens und seiner Werkstatt kennen – sein trunkener Körper liegt bäuchlings auf dem Boden, die Ursache seiner Trunkenheit und der damit verbundenen unkontrollierten Wollust, nämlich ein metallisches antikisierendes Trinkgefäß, liegt ebenfalls auf dem Boden am unteren Bildrand, von seinen Fingern noch umkrallt. Besonders die Figurengruppe von Virtus und Fortuna ist uns wohl bekannt aus einem Gemälde, das im Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, Argentinien (Inv.Nr. 8629) verwahrt wird und die beiden Figuren seitenverkehrt wiedergibt (siehe Vergleichsabb.). Seitenrichtig wiederum ist eine Werkstattarbeit im Musée Grobet Labadié in Marseille zu nennen, das jedoch einen geflügelten Mann und eine Frau zusätzlich zeigt, die nach der behelmten Figur zu greifen sucht – Michael Jaffé bezeichnete das Gemälde als „Allegorie der guten Regierung“, Erwin Panofsky erkannte die beiden weiblichen Hauptfiguren als Fortuna und Virtus. Eine ähnliche Ikonografie kennen wir etwa aus einer Allegorie mit Blick auf die Zitadelle in Antwerpen aus dem Jahre 1634 im Musée des Beaux-Arts in Besançon. Komplizierte verkürzte Figuren sind im Werk des Rubens und seiner Werkstatt keine Seltenheit und werden gern für ein dramatisches Schicksal erleidende Figuren wie etwa „Der gefesselte Prometheus“ („Prometheus Bound“) im Philadelphia Museum of Art (Inv.Nr. W1950-3-1) verwendet, wodurch die an den Betrachterraum angrenzende Figur – wie hier der Bacchus – eine optimale Einleitung in das Seh- und Empfindungserlebnis durch den Betrachter bietet. Das hier angebotene Gemälde ist von hoher Qualität und zeigt mit seiner fleischigen Körperlichkeit, der geschlossenen geschickten Komposition und dem Rubensschen Kolorit eine große Nähe zu dem wohl größten nordalpinen Barockmaler und seiner Werkstatt. (†)Anmerkung:Die rechte Rückenfigur ist eine etwas im Uhrzeigersinn nach rechts gedrehte Variante der rechten Rückenfigur in „Die Auffindung des kleinen Erichthonios“ von 1616 von Peter Paul Rubens, die in den Sammlungen des Fürsten von und zu Liechtenstein, Vaduz/Wien aufbewahrt ist und mit 218 x 317 cm noch größer ist, als das hier angebotene qualitätvolle Gemälde.Bezüglich der weiblichen Figur mit Helm vergleiche auch das Gemälde „Tod und Sieg des römischen Konsuls Decius Mus“ von 1616/1617. Rubens verwendete solche häufig in seinen Gemälden und variierte vergoldete Akzente, Federaufsätze und Aufsatzfiguren. Meist sind es Adler, im hier vorliegenden Gemälde eine Schlange. They are the goddesses Virtus with a plume helmet and Fortuna sitting on a globe diagonally in front of her with an oar and blowing cloth. The figural group of Virtus and Fortuna are particularly known from a painting held at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, Argentina (inv. no. 8629) which shows the two figures inverted (see comparative ill.).Complicated, foreshortened figures are not uncommon in Rubens’ oeuvre and his workshop and are often used for figures suffering a dramatic fate such as “Prometheus Bound” in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (inv. no. W1950-3-1), whereby the figure nearest the viewer – like Bacchus in this lot – offers an ideal introduction to the viewer’s visual and sensory experience. She is also known for her portrayal of Catwoman, replacing Julie Newmar in the film version of Batman (1966), and for a co-starring role on the science fiction series The Time Tunnel. With a career spanning 45 years, she attained international stardom as an actress in both musical and dramatic roles, as a recording artist, and on the concert stage. Renowned for her versatility, she received an Academy Juvenile Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Special Tony Award. Natural History: A Very Rare Collection of World Seashells, by repute collected by HMS Challenger, 1872-1876, an interesting and rare to find collection outside of any institution and or museum, a large collection of various World seashells collected by the crew of H.M.S. Challenger while circumnavigating the globe between 1872-1876, housed within a period double door collectors cabinet, the doors opening to reveal eight various sized drawers with indexed individual compartments, all shells with attached data labels, including a small handwritten ledger documenting specimens in full, with locations noted, cabinet size 66.5cm by 37.5cm by 68cmWe know more about the surface of the moon than about the ocean floor. Scientists estimate that 91 percent of life under the sea hasn’t been discovered yet and more than 80 percent of the ocean has never been explored. What we do know about the ocean makes it almost more mysterious. It’s an alien landscape, complete with undersea mountain ranges and trenches deeper than Mount Everest is tall, home to a glorious nightmare carnival of weird, often glowing animals. And most of what we know has only come to light in the last 150 years, starting with the expedition of HMS Challenger. From 1872 to 1876, the 200-foot-long warship was repurposed as a floating lab for the world’s first large-scale oceanographic expedition, circumnavigating the globe and dredging up samples of never-before-seen creatures from the ocean floor. The Challenger explorers brought to light thousands of new species and revealed the oceans to be a place of startling depths and untold wonders. Decades later, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for her work on the soap opera The Edge of Night.
