'The Earth' by C. Abel Klinger, Nuremberg, [circa 1860] A miniature globe in original box Exceptionally well preserved, with rich colours and crisp details, minimal scuffing and no loss of paper, housed in original box with a pictorial paper label pasted to the lid, rubbed to base and edges, in a scarce condition, rare to the UK market, C. Abel Klinger, Nuremberg, [c.1860]Art dealer and engraver Johann Georg Klinger (1764-1806) was the last great Nuremberg globe-maker. On Klinger's death, the firm was run by his widow under the title of Klingers Kunsthandlung. In 1831, control passed to engraver Johann Dreykorn who worked in co-operation with engraver Johann Adam Bühler (1813-1870), and with Johann Bernhard Bauer (1752-1839). During this period, the globes continued to be issued under the name of Klingers Kunsthandlung, although some bore the names Klinger, Bauer. In 1852, however, when merchant Carl Abel became manager of the firm, the title was changed to Abel and Klinger's Art Shop before becoming more simply C. Abel Klingers Kunsthandlung. The latter half of the nineteenth century saw Klinger globes being issued in a variety of languages (including, as here, in Dutch) in an attempt to obtain a share of the European market. The firm was eventually dissolved after World War I. This is in a fine condition. There are a couple of infinitesimal spots around the title; an uncoloured, very small, between to sheets, in the seem, running through Africa. The globe has an approximately 10cm diameter; with the box measuring 11cm high and 11.5cm in diameter.

The first full-length account of the historic experiments with balloon flight conducted by the Montgolfier brothers in 1783, and "the first serious treatise on aerostation as a practical possibility" (PMM). The Montgolfier brothers, Joseph (1740-1810) and Étienne (1745-99), had been intrigued by the experiments of Cavendish and Priestly with 'inflammable air' (hydrogen). "After some unsatisfactory experiments with hydrogen gas (which dissipated too quickly from their trial models), the Montgolfiers discovered that air heated to 100 degrees Celsius became sufficiently rarefied to lift a balloon and did not diffuse. On 5 June 1783 the brothers released their first full-sized balloon, a paper and linen globe thirty-five feet in diameter, which rose 6,000 feet and travelled a horizontal distance of 7,668 feet from the starting point. On 19 September, before Louis XVI and the French court, they launched the first flight with living beings aboard (a sheep, a cock and a duck); and on 20 November the first manned flight took place. Barthélemy Faujas de Saint-Fond was a successful lawyer and geologist, and one of the most ardent supporters of ballooning. He sponsored the first hydrogen balloon of the physicist J. A. C. Charles, who demonstrated balloon flight before the Montgolfiers, and invented the hydrogen balloon. Scarce

A 17th/18th century Italian gilded and carved limewood cherub on a rectangular gilded base 24cm wide 55cm wide Losses to fingers. Cracks, splits and a bit of woodworm to base.Craquelure to globe and with small losses. To body also cracks, vertical ones amd these running through left of face.  Hole to back of one hand and two additional round dots. Crack or chip to right knee.  We think it has been varnished. Later lacquered. Cracks and breakages to feet. Base with original gilding. New pictures uploaded to condition report.

Western Roman Empire, Honorius (AD 393-423) gold solidus, obv; bust of Honorius, helmeted, shield over left shoulder and spear in right hand over shoulder, rev; Constantinopolis enthroned facing, head right, holding sceptre with right hand and Victory on globe with left hand, left foot on prow. (1)Has been punched above the head which has left a rectangular dent with small hole and bulge to the reverse.
