Orbis Terrarum Nova et Accurata Tabula . This double-hemisphere world map is a stunning example of the baroque style that was popular at the end of the 17th century. Surrounding the map are delightful allegorical scenes representing the four seasons: joyous Spring, industrious Summer, bucolic Autumn, and icy Winter. Valck based this map on his earlier Mappe-Monde Geo-Hydrographique, or Description Generale de Globe Terrestre et Aquatique from 1686, which in turn was based on Jaillot`s influential world map of 1674. California appears as an island, and a large Terra Incognita sive Terra Esonis stretches from North America to Asia. Greenland is connected to North America. Australia, Van Diemen`s Land, and New Zealand are only partially delineated, and Australia appears almost connected to Terra dos Papos sive N. Guinea.Valck updated this edition to include the newly-discovered Mississippi basin as well as the conjectural Mer Glaciale, which appears to almost connect Hudsons Bay with Mare Californie. Although the Great Lakes are still in a preliminary configuration, they are fully delineated. The southern continent has been completely erased, and the mythical Lake Parime no longer appears in South America. Insets with polar projections and additional allegorical vignettes in the cusps complete the composition.See also lot 772 for Rodney Shirley`s excellent reference work on world maps, which discusses this map. An excellent impression in full original color with good margins. There is very minor toning along the edges of the sheet, and a few minor spots in the lower blank margin. 22.8"" W x 19.2"" H . Valck, Gerard and Leonard . 1700

Mappemonde ou Description du Globe Terrestre Dressee sur les Memoires les Plus Nouveaux, et Assujettie aux Observations Astronomiques . This lovely and decorative double-hemisphere map shows the tracks of the voyages of Bouvet de Lozier (1738-39) in the Antarctic and of Anson (1740-43) across the Pacific, along with the Manilla - Acapulco route of the Spanish galleons. It was Anson`s capture of a richly laden galleon in 1743 that made his expedition so important in the annals of Pacific voyages. Australia is depicted with a conjectural coastline connected to Tasmania, and Terre de Diemen appears both in Tasmania and on the northern coast. In North America the Pacific Northwest is beginning to take shape with the additions of Admiral de Fonte`s discoveries, although there are still numerous inaccuracies. A series of rivers and lakes appears to depict at least one Northwest Passage, including L. de Fonte, Gr. Riviere de l`Ouest, and Lac Bernarda. The map is decorated with an elaborate, figural cartouche that was designed by Cochin and engraved by Groux. The attribution cartouche at the bottom is flanked by putti and clouds. This is the third state with changes to the Pacific Northwest. Issued folding on watermarked paper with several short fold separations that have been professionally repaired. There is light soiling, a few light creases, and a 1"" tear extending from centerfold towards South America that has also been professionally repaired. 27.9"" W x 18.5"" H . [Lot of 2] Amer. Sep. Partie des Etats-Unis. No. 49 [and] Amer. Sep. Partie des Etats-Unis. No. 55 . A. Amer. Sep. Partie des Etats-Unis. No. 49, (23.0 x 18.9""). This fascinating map provides an excellent view of Missouri and Illinois with very early county development. The map is centered on the Missouri River, extending to the Platte and Omaha regions with excellent information on Indian Tribes and village populations, mineral deposits and explorers routes. B. Amer. Sep. Partie des Etats-Unis. No. 55, (19.9 x 18.3""). Interesting sheet depicting the Red River portion of northern Texas and part of the Territory of Arkansas, which included a portion of future Oklahoma. The Atlas Universel was a monumental work and milestone in cartography; particularly the cartography of the American West. It was the first atlas of the world with all maps on the same scale (1: 1,641,836 - about one inch to 26 miles) and the first lithographed world atlas. The maps (400 in all) were intended to be joined together, thus forming a globe measuring 7.75 meters in diameter. There was only one edition, published in a series of parts between 1825-27, and the subscription list shows that only 810 copies were sold. Clean and bright examples with just a few tiny spots in the images. See description . Vandermaelen, Philippe Marie Guillaume . 1825

Lot 207

Amer. Sep. Partie des Etats-Unis. No. 39 . This lithographed map covers parts of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming with the Yellowstone River along the eastern border, the Lewis River (Salmon River) along the western border, and the Missouri River to the north. It features Lewis and Clark`s route with notations concerning the hardships they encountered on the passage. John Colter`s 1807 route through Crow country is also shown. The map is based on the Lewis and Clark map as evidenced by the erroneous Lake Riddle draining into the Big Horn River. Several Indian tribes are located (along with their population) but there are no towns or settlements shown. The source of the Yellowstone River is noted as chaude et sulfurease (hot and sulfurous). There is great detail of the topography, with relief shown by hachures. The Atlas Universel contained 400 maps in six volumes. It was the first atlas made up of lithographed maps, and the first to present all the maps on the same scale (1: 1,641,836), with each map covering an area of approximately 20 degrees longitude (from Paris) and 6 degrees of latitude. If all the maps were joined together they would form a globe of 7.75 meters in diameter. The maps were published by subscription between 1825 and 1827, with each part containing ten maps. There was only one edition and the subscription list shows that 810 copies were sold; thus the maps are quite rare. Very light toning. 20.8"" W x 18.8"" H . Mexico & Texas . This small map shows the independent Republic of Texas with its wide panhandle reaching the Spanish Peaks and Arkansas River and including Santa Fe and Taos. New Mexico is reduced to a narrow corridor between the Rio Bravo and the Sierra de los Mimbres mountain range. Houston, Parker`s Fort, Swartwout, Goliad, Iguana, Refugio, Franklin, and Presidio de Altar are among the many place names in Texas. There is no hint of the Gold Rush in Upper or New California and most of the area between Texas and California is undefined, except for locating various Native American tribes. Above the title is a unique compass rose built around a globe focusing on the Western Hemisphere. In the upper margin is an interesting diagram of the comparative lengths of England and Mexico & Texas. Nice impression and color with one small, faint spot of foxing. 11.3"" W x 9.1"" H . [Untitled - Globe Gore of the Atlantic Ocean] . This large, attractive globe gore of the Atlantic Ocean includes considerable coastline detail along the northeastern seaboard of North America, the West Indies and the northern coast of South America. The map shows both the northern and southern sailing routes to Europe, a fishing vessel off the coast of New England, two rowboats, and a group of manatees. Vincenzo Coronelli was a Franciscan priest and renowned mathematician and cartographer. He was appointed official Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic in 1685 and founded the world`s earliest geographic society, L`Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. Watermarked paper with minor soiling at bottom and a few minor printer`s creases. 11"" W x 18"" H . Coronelli, Vicenzo Maria . 1697

[On 2 Sheets] England and Wales Drawn from the Most Accurate Surveys Containing All the Cities Boroughs Market Towns & Villages... Large and magnificent four sheet map filled with remarkable details down to the smallest village. The map shows hundreds of roads with distance information between towns. The legend identifies numerous physical features through icons for towns and villages by size, local markets, astronomical observation sites, and more. The large title cartouche with fancy lettering depicts Britannia holding a staff with the liberty cap, Athena, Hermes, an angel with a harp and a book of Shakespeare, a lion with a trident, surveying instruments, a globe, etc. The seas are embellished with numerous sailing ships and a fine compass rose. The imprint of Robert Sayer Map & Printseller at the Golden Buck in Fleet Street appears below the neatline at bottom. As issued with two sheets joined to form a two-part map. When top and bottom are joined, the map will measure approximately 39 x 46"". A nice impression with attractive color and minor soiling. There are a few short fold separations and edge tears that enter about 1"" to 2"" into map that have been closed on verso with archival material. There are pale blue shadows along the folds which are caused by our scanner and to not appear on the map itself. 38.9"" W x 23"" H . Rocque, John . 1761

A Correct Map of Moscovy Humbly Dedicated to the Honourable Sr. Thomas Powell of Broadway in Carmarthenshire... A beautiful cartouche crowns this rare, large-scale map of the heart of Russia, printed on two sheets, now joined. It covers from the White Sea to the Sea of Azov and from Lake Ladoga to the Kama and Volga River valleys. The map is filled with incredible detail and extensive notations locating cities, villages, salt mines, fortifications, castles, ruins, forests, and roads. At St. Petersburg there is a note that the town was built by the Czar. Charles Price was an English mapmaker whose works were nearly all collaborative efforts in a succession of ill-fated partnerships that were not commercially successful. This map was sold by George Wieldey & Timothy Brandreth at the Archimedes & Globe in Ludgate Street, London. While dated 1711, it was likely issued after WildeyÂ’s acquisition of some of PriceÂ’s plates in 1713. George Wiledey (aka Wildey), a spectacle and scientific instrument maker and a publisher, went on to become a notable toy maker. A dark impression with original outline color. The map has been professionally backed in tissue to repair numerous separations, tears, and small holes along the folds. There is also light soiling and some toning along the folds. 25.4"" W x 38.1"" H . Price, Charles . 1711

Insulae Indiae Orientalis Praecipuae, in Quibus Moluccae Celeberrimae Sunt . This impressive map reflects the increasing Dutch interest in South East Asia in the wake of the establishment of the Dutch East India Company. It is one of two Asian maps that Hondius added to his expanded edition of the Mercator Atlas first published in 1606. The map covers the Malaysian Peninsula, Indochina, the Philippines and all of the East Indies as far as New Guinea, thus illustrating the vitally important Spice Islands. Much of the geographical data for this map is based on the portolan charts of the Portuguese cartographer, Bartolomeu Lasso and Plancius` important map of the region. There are important new details added on the northern islands of the Philippines and Marianas, and a curious channel bisects the Malaysian Peninsula. The southern coastline of Java is incomplete except for a bay with a note that Sir Francis Drake landed there during his circumnavigation of the globe. This is one of the few maps to show any trace of Francis Drake`s explorations in South East Asia. A detailed note at lower right discusses the location of Marco PoloÂ’s Java Minor. The map is richly embellished with strapwork cartouches, compass roses, a sea monster, and a sea battle between Dutch and Spanish galleons. Latin text on verso. Fine impression and color with original margins. There is one small rust spot in New Guinea and light, scattered foxing primarily confined to the blank margins. 18.9"" W x 13.6"" H . Hondius, Jodocus . 1623

[Lot of 2] Cosmographia [with] Charta Cosmographica, cum Ventorum Propria Natura & Operatione . Included with this Latin edition of Apianus` popular Cosmographia is a very interesting world map based on the now lost world map of Gemma Frisius, which is significant in the history of the mapping of America. The continents are broadly based on Mercator`s globe gores of 1541, but North America is shown as a long slender landmass labeled Baccalearium in reference to the cod fishing region off the coasts of New England and Canada. It employs a cordiform projection and depicts a distinct northern passage to Asia over the top of North America. There are few geographical features other than the prominent twin lake sources of the Nile in Africa. The heart-shaped border of the map contains signs of the zodiac within a cloud background filled with mythical figures and wind heads. One of the deities at top sports the design of the Holy Roman Emperor`s double eagle on his breastplate and the three cadaverous wind heads at bottom represent plague-carrying winds of the south. This is an example from the second of three woodblocks, issued with Latin and Dutch text. The world map is not attached to the book, and actually comes from a different example of the Cosmographia, as it is printed on a slightly larger sheet. The Cosmographia of Petrus Apianus was one of the most popular books on cosmography ever published. It covers a multitude of subjects including the climatic zones, the uses of parallels and meridians, the determination of latitude and longitude, map projections, etc. One of the reasons it was enormously popular is the inclusion of volvelles that enabled one to solve practical mathematical problems relating to time telling, the calendar, astronomy and astrology. There are four (of five) of these ingenious paper devices included, and numerous other interesting diagrams and illustrations. The movable parts of the volvelle Aux Solis are missing. In addition to the world map, there is also a small map of Greece, and one of the volvelles is constructed on a map of the northern hemisphere. This edition, corrected and augmented by geographer and mathematician Gemma Frisius, contains Gemma`s important treatise on triangulation, which first appeared in 1533. The treatise was the first instance of triangulation being proposed as a means of locating and mapping places. 8vo, in full vellum covers. The map is a nice impression on watermarked paper with original margins, a tiny centerfold separation in top blank margin, and a few faint spots of foxing. One of the nicer examples we`ve seen, with only a centerfold rather than the typical multi-folded examples found in most Cosmographia. The text is mildly toned, with folio text pages 46-48 missing. The four volvelles are in excellent working condition. The covers and spine are lightly toned and soiled. 6"" W x 8.9"" H . Apianus, Peter Bienewitz . 1564

Atlas de Toutes les Parties Connues du Globe Terrestre, Dresse Pour l`Historie Philosophique & PolitiqueÂ… . This is the atlas volume for Abbe Raynal`s ""L`Histoire Philosophique et Politique des Etablissemens et du Commerce des Europeens dans les Deux Indes"" and is filled with Bonne`s well-drawn maps and charts engraved by Andre. The title page, list of maps, and Analyse Succincet de Cet Atlas are not present but a manuscript title page and list of maps have been included (see images). Map collation appears complete. The map contents include two world maps, Europe, Asia, Africa, ten related to Europe, three related to Africa, two related to India, Arabia, the East Indies, the Moluccas, China, Persia, Philippines, Russia, six related to South America, several Caribbean charts, plus North America and those related: Mexico; le Nouveau Mexique; Terre-Neuve, Acadia...; Occidentale du Canada; Louisiana & Florida; Partie Nord des Etats Unis; and Partie Sud des Etats Unis. In the North America map, the entire western part of the continent is left mostly blank. Indian tribes occupy the edges of the defined territory -- Apaches, Sioux, Outagamis, and Assenipouels. The British Colonies and a few major cities are named along the eastern seaboard and in the Great Lakes region. Alaska is shown as a group of islands, the largest of which is labeled Alaschka. Quarter-calf over marbled boards with gilt tooling and title on spine. The atlas volume did not carry any publication information on the title pages, but was known to be published in 1780. The maps are generally very good to near fine except the following: the world map (B) is somewhat soiled with a small burn mark in the top left corner just touching the neatline; and the maps of the Southeast United States and West Indies at the back of the volume have some small brown stains in the image. The hinges are perished and have been replaced with archival tape, which also serves to hold the manuscript title page and list of maps in place. Covers are bumped and worn with just a few minor cracks along the joint. 8.3"" W x 10.3"" H . Bonne/Raynal, 1780
