B[ulwer] (J[ohn]) Anthropometamorphosis: Man Transform'd: or the Artificiall Changling Historically, second much enlarged edition, engraved portrait by William Fairthorne tipped-in to front endpaper, engraved frontispiece, with letter-press explanatory leaf, unsigned leaf after S2 with woodcut illustrations to both sides, woodcut illustrations throughout, a few later printed slips laid to pastedowns, frontispiece slightly shaved at foot, 4A2-3 lightly stained, some light marginal browning and occasional spots, contemporary calf, rebacked, spine gilt with red morocco label, small 4to, [Wing B5461], William Hunt, 1653.*** The second much enlarged edition, the first illustrated, of this extraordinary work by John Bulwer (1606-1656).  On the theme of the human body as a medium of communication, he examines various cosmetic alterations and artificial deformations practiced by people across the globe; for example, tattooing, make-up, castration, circumcision, ear piercing, and hair removal. Recognised as an early work of comparative cultural anthropology, Bulwer's Baconian bent and moral perspective are also perceptible, with a clear emphasis on the natural as morally superior to the artificial. Bulwer was medical practitioner with a special interest in deafness and gesture, perhaps the first person in England to propose education of deaf people.
