A Victorian silver and cut glass bon bon dish and stand, the silver domed circular lid with cast flower finial and foliate engraved decoration, initialled 'B' and 'F' to reserves, JE, London 1867, 3.06 toz, the etched and clear glass bowl of tapering form with lobed rim and conforming stand, 18 by 16cm high.
Ca.100 AD A wonderful free-blown bowl made from a dense, translucent, pale-green glass. The vessel sits upon a rounded base with a smooth pontil scar and boasts tall walls which turn slightly inwards at the rim. A pair of wheel-cut lines are displayed along the interior just below the rim and give the bowl a personalized appearance. Thick sections of fiery silver and rainbow iridescence accentuate the soft verdant hue of the bowl and make this a gorgeous example of fine Roman craftsmanship. Base repaired in antiquity, Good condition. 100x35mm;125gr. Provenance: Private London collection, formed in the 1970s on the UK and European art market. A William IV period King's Messenger Badge, the silver gilt and enamel crowned badge with painted coat of arms encased with glass within 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' garter, silver-gilt back plate with silver greyhound pendant and blue silk neck cravat (Qty: 1)The first King's Messenger was John Norman who was appointed in 1485 by King Richard III to hand deliver secret documents and later during the exile of Charles II, the King appointed four trusted men to convey messages to Royal forces in England. As a sign of authority, the King broke four silver greyhounds from a bowl familiar to royal courtiers and gave one to each man, hence the silver greyhound pendant attached to the badge which a symbol of the service.
