Some rubbing to the enamelled Mary Gregory-style decoration, scratches, inclusions and general wear to glass, some fritting to rims also. Both inkwells with detached lids, some further chips and nibbles to these. Further detail unavailable as due to the extensive group nature of this lot it is impossible to further individualise. A rare engraved airtwist capillaire glass, circa 1750The drawn trumpet bowl inscribed 'Capillaire' within a wreath of tied foliage, on a multi-spiral airtwist stem and conical foot, 13.8cm highFootnotes:Capillaire was a liqueur flavoured with maidenhair fern (Capillaris Herba) or orange flower water, for which there are numerous recipes. It was used as a sweetening agent for spirits. In the 18th century convivial social groups, or capillaire societies, met to drink this special cordial. An engraved political commemorative facet-stem wine glass, circa 1775-80The ovoid bowl inscribed 'WILKES & LIBERTY', the reverse with bird in flight, the lower part with diamond-cut facets extending to a diamond faceted stem, over a conical foot with a star-cut base, 11.7cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceJames Hall Collection, Bonhams sale, 17 December 2008, lot 183John Wilkes (1727-1797) was a controversial MP and journalist who played a critical role in the development of radical politics. He mocked the King's speech at the opening of Parliament in April 1763 in issue 45 of the 'North Briton', a weekly satirical pamphlet published by Wilkes. He was subsequently tried and convicted for seditious libel but freed under Parliamentary Privilege. He became Lord Mayor of the City of London in 1774 and was elected to Parliament the following year. However, his popularity was destroyed after the Gordon Riots of 1780, in which he led militia forces against rioters. A fine north-eastern rummer from the Lambton Service, circa 1823From the Wear Flint Glassworks, Sunderland, the flared bucket bowl deeply cut all around with alternating plain and diamond-cut pillar flutes beneath a prismatic-cut band, the front panel engraved with the full arms of John George Lambton with the family motto 'LE LOUR VIENDRA' (The Day Will Come), the spreading petal-cut foot with a star of fine diamond panels to the underside, 14.3cm highFootnotes:The arms are those of John George Lambton of Lambton Hall, Co. Durham who was appointed Lord Privy Seal from 1830 and created Earl in 1833. The service, which originally comprised 239 pieces, was felt to be a triumph of glassmaking and it is documented that in 1823 a decanter and four glasses from the set were carried through the streets of Newcastle-upon-Tyne as part of a parade. The Lambton set was one of three extensive Regency cut glass services made for the Londonderry, Lambton and Darnell families. These are discussed by Simon Cottle, The Darnell Service, in The Glass Cone, no.72 (2005), pp.4-5. The service was dispersed in 1932. A 'Prince of Wales Decanter' from the Lambton service was sold by Bonhams on 16 December 2009, lot 121 and this was acquired by the Corning Museum of Glass (accession no. 2009.2.35). An engraved 'Friendly Hunt' firing glass of Jacobite interest, circa 1750The drawn trumpet bowl inscribed 'THE FRIENDLY HUNT' flanking a floral sprig, on a short plain stem and heavy conical foot, 8.9cm highFootnotes:The Friendly Hunt was a Worcestershire meet probably connected with a Jacobite society in Worcester known as The Friendly Association. Founded in 1747, the Association met annually in rotation in the neighbouring towns of Droitwich, Bromsgrove, Kidderminster and Stourbridge.
