A rare 18th century engraved commemorative airtwist wine glass, circa 1750, the bowl etched with a hanging scene on the gallows, reading 'THE COWARD REWARDED', the hanging figure with letters A and B either side for Admiral Byng, on a multi-spiral stem and conical foot, 15.5 cm highLiterature: A very similar glass from the A C Hubbard Jr Collection was sold by Bonhams on 30 November 2011, lot 87 and is illustrated by Ward Lloyd, A Wine Lover's Glasses (2000), p.125, pl.199.Admiral John Byng was a Royal Naval officer until his death in 1757. During the Seven Years War, Byng was sent to relieve a besieged garrison at Minorca. With his ships in a poor state of repair, Byng opted to return to Gibraltar to see to his ships and await further promised resources. On his return to Britain he was court-martialled for failing to "do his utmost" to prevent the loss of Minorca. He was executed by firing squad on 14th March 1757 - the engraving on the glass being symbolic rather than accurate - despite appeals to King George II for clemency.
