SEVEN STERLING TWIN HANDLED SMALL DISHES (7)Each with floral and foliate decoration and raised on a circular foot, diameter 8.5cm, combined weight 630 gmsCondition Report; The pieces are marked Sterling to the left of one of the two handles and with further foreign markings, which we do not know what they mean, to the other side of the handles. One handle is repaired at the bottom of the bowl.Six of the dishes are engraved with initials NWH within lozenge shaped surrounds and the seventh dish is simply engraved with one initial. Please note the glass liners are lacking.

Some weathering and incrustation occur in the inner surface, whilst the outside shows a beautiful iridescence. Glass was a major manufacturing industry in the Roman Empire, especially after the invention of glassblowing in the middle of the first century BC, when glass became used for a variety of purposes including vessels, jewellery and construction materials such as glass or tiles. Ca. 250 - 400 AD.A glass cage-cup with a pale iridescent hemispherical body with rounded base, curved and outsplayed rim; wheelcut decoration in the form of a blue collar of projecting openwork flange of ovolo pattern; cage in blue glass covering body and base consisting a central circle surrounded by two concentric rings of meshes, heart-shaped in innermost ring; two rows of rings each with a cruciform motif concealing strut which attaches cage to side of bowl. Cf. Harden, D. Glass of the Caesars, London, 1987, p. 242 for the Constable Maxwell Cage-Cup.
