A large Victorian silver plated centrepiece, in the form of a giraffe under a palm tree, having a cut glass bowl, with a scroll inscribed 'Presented to Charles J Wadman, by a few friends on his attaining his majority, Bath 30th November 1877', on a mirrored stand, 55cm high overall. A Charles Wadman is recorded as working at The Firm of Wadman Bros. in Bath, Somerset, circa 1870, as a timber merchant and cabinet maker. This centrepiece is thought to have been gifted to Captain W.P.B. Beal at Whipsnade Zoo during the first half of the 20th century, the zoo's first superintendent, before being passed down through the family.
