Salviati Murano ruby red champagne saucer with stylised dolphin stem, Victorian cranberry glass jug, a 20th century cut glass pedestal compote, three cranberry glass jugs, a small cranberry glass bowl with gilt floral decoration, a small cranberry glass vase with gilt floral decoration and a quantity of glass sweets (13)Condition ReportClouding, accretions and small chips to base of Victorian cranberry jug. Smaller red jug with substantial crack. Some minor clouding to all jugs. The three similar red jugs probably early 20th century.
An unusual early 19th century vinaigrette, the round domed white metal hinged lid with engraved floral decoration & inscribed in gothic lettering “Viniagrette”, enclosing a Prince-of-Wales feather grille, the clear glass base with faceted sides & original sponge, 1¼” (un-marked); a George IV caddy spoon with shell bowl, London 1829 by Wm Eaton (slight faults); & a modern ditto, Birmingham 1966 by Alexander Smith.
A pair of Edwardian silver vase-shaped wirework pepper pots with flame finials to the pull-off lids, each on circular foot & with blue glass liner, 3¾” high, Chester 1905 by Haseler Bros.; & a Dutch small ladle with embossed round bowl & cast zoomorphic handle, 3½” long, London import marks for 1895.
3rd-7th century A.D. A hemispherical, opaque brown glass bowl or cup with four decorative tiers of cut facets. Cf. Whitehouse, D., Sasanian and Post-Sasanian Glass in The Corning Museum of Glass, New York, 2005, p.43, for similar. 261 grams, 13 cm wide (5 1/8 in.). Acquired on the French art market, 1990s-early 2000s. From an important Paris gallery, France. Ex private Parisian collection.
8th century B.C. An Athenian geometric high-rimmed bowl composed of a carinated body, shallow foot and twin 'ribbon' handles; painted friezes composed of alternating geometric panels including chequerboard, hatched, gammadion and circular motifs to the upper body, Greek key motif to the equator, chevrons to the handles and solid circumferential bands alternating with a band of dots and of chevrons to the lower body; solid bands of varying depth to the interior. Cf. The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University, object number 1983.005, for similar; cf. The British Museum, museum number 1910,0414.5, for a broadly comparable bowl. 652 grams, 24 cm wide (9 1/2 in.). Ex David William Akehurst collection by descent. David Akehurst joined the British Museum in 1948, initially in the Greek and Roman Antiquities department, then moving to be Chief Conservation Officer of glass and ceramics until his retirement in 1982. Accompanied by an original thermoluminescence analysis report no.N122j41, from Oxford Authentication. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate no.114480-196156. Possibly Late Geometric IIa, 735-720 B.C. A VICTORIAN LARGE MAHOGANY AND INLAID BOMBE SHAPED TEA CADDY, the hinged cover with parquetry cube inlay to the top panel, mirror fitted to the lid interior, the caddy fitted with two parquetry topped rectangular slide in cannisters flanking a cut glass mixing / sugar bowl, the caddy with circular mother of pearl escutcheon, turned wood ring handles and on flattened bun feet, width 45cm x depth 27cm x height 23cm, with key (Condition report: one back foot is missing, one of the handles is loose from the caddy, the front right hand facing corner has veneer loss and damage, similar below left hand facing front corner below the lid, splits to the sides of both hinges and split along the entire length of the back panel below the hinges, it looks as though the lid has been completely broken off at this point, silvering to mirror has deteriorated, the mixing bowl has a large chip to the foot)
