AN EARLY 20TH CENTURY WALNUT CASED KALLIOPE POLYPHON, the hinged lid inlaid with red 'Kalliope' within a square of boxwood banding, walnut escutcheon is chipped, the clockwork movement playing 23.4cm / 9 1/4 inch discs on an 8.5cm cylinder and six bells, retailers plaque for 'W.S. Riley and Son' of Birmingham and printed mountainous landscape scene to the interior of the lid, the case on four turned bun feet, case width 29.5cm x depth 27.5cm x height 17.5cm, comes with the winding handle and fourteen discs, titles include Auld Lang Syne, The Absent-Minded Beggar, A Good Irish Jig, Soldiers in the Park March and My Old Kentucky Home, Good Night (1 + winder and 14 discs) (Condition report: the case has lifting to the veneer and inlay on the lid, split to the top right hand corner of the lid, the escutcheon is broken, otherwise in well used condition commensurate with age and use, the comb is missing a tooth and has two further missing tips, some of the springs on the bells look stretched, the movement winds and plays, some of the discs are rusted)

Four Melanesian combs Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea one with red and natural fibre binding, with a British and Foreign Bible Society label inscribed Comb, South Sea Islands, 19cm long, another with tight binding as a stylised bird, 21cm long, one with glass beads and seeds, 29cm long and the fourth with a carved knop finial and fibre binding, 18cm long. dating: 16th Century provenance: Southern Germany, Skull in one piece, with a low roped and twisted comb, provided with an oblique slot at the center, with shelled bands alternating with outlined risers at the sides; pointed and ribbed visor with eye-slots, the aeration slots arranged vertically, with wavy lower edge featuring a snap button and a lever; beaver (the lock is missing) with lower edge decorated with a swallowtailed margin and a twisted rope; with one-plate nape-guard at the back, decorated like the skull. height 32 cm.
dating: last quarter of the 16th Century provenance: Southern Germany, Interlocked helmet with skull made in one piece, provided with wide comb featuring a twisted edge. The skull worked with blackened and longitudinal lowered bands continuing on the raisable brim, which is cusped and featuring a twisted rope. Blackened beaver provided with two beaver plates with large, cross-shaped and rectangular air holes. The lower part of the helmet with an interlocking twisted channel between the skull and the braver. With iron plume-holder at the back. The internal part dyed in black and with remains of old coiets. Four-plate gorget, the upper plate with a fine, twisted rope, with blackened lowered bands, the relieved parts are iron-colored. Fine breast-plate with a quite pronounced tapul, with vertical bands and large, lowered, black-dyed areas. Thick neckline with a fine twisted decoration surmounting a mark. Complete brassards with asymmetrical pauldrons, worked en suite and with throat-guard. The right one strongly carved at the front and featuring a cusped wheel worked as a flower on a blackened background and with a roped edge en suite with the pauldron. The left plate of the shoulder decorated with a compass rose and small holes on a blackened background and with ropes worked en suite with the rest. Brassards worked with bands in relief on a blackened background. The gauntlets decorated likewise. The fingers scales are restored, as specified in the previous sale (see below). Back-plate worked en suite. Elegant complete knee-cop with the same decoration as the breast-plate and with ropes worked as the other parts of the armour. The black-colored parts are probably refreshed. A beautiful ensemble difficult to find in such a cohesive and good state. dating: late 18th Century provenance: Sardinian Kingdom, Wide blade with fuller for three quarters of the length, some areas with pitting, clearly marked with the motto 'VIVE LE ROI DE SARDAIGNE' on the third side, the Savoy's eagle surmounted by a crown among floral decorations on the opposite side. Brass hilt with butt-plate shaped as a lozenge and guard provided with an additional loop guard. Long cap, ending in a beautiful helmet with comb and chanfrin shaped as a grotesque mask. Grip with probably earlier covering, leather with spirals of copper wire bindings. Earlier leather scabbard complete with small metal chape and with remains of the loop. length 75,5 cm.
