A 14 bore Russian 1839 pattern Cossack trooper's flintlock pistol, 16" overall, barrel 9½" with brass blade fore sight and rearsight integral with the breech tang, and stamped at the breech with small Imperial eagle in circle and date 1842; the lock engraved with the name of the Sestroretsk arsenal and the date 1818 on the lower bevelled edge; dark painted halfstock with no provision for ramrod, the brass mounts comprise long spurred butt cap bearing various marks and date 1821, oval escutcheon with cypher of Alexander I (1801-25), trigger guard, sideplate and barrel band retaining bar all bearing various marks including the date 1842. Good Condition (some service wear, action requires attention, comb of cock and top jaw and screw missing, old split to fore end and signs of old repair to butt fracture). Although some 1839 pattern pistols were manufactured from new, the majority were converted from the 1809 pattern. Plate 20

Four Cardboard Fixed Screens, probably 1920's, Spanish, printed in bold colours, each with different fruits and a different feature, including a lady holding a large folding ballon fan, another with tall hair comb and flower behind her ear, one presented as from the 18th century, with feathers, and one holding a champagne glass and sporting an elaborate headdress. All four advertise the ''pastes Alementicies I Forn de Pa de Josepha Corominas'' and carry a mark of most likely the printer, in Barcelona. Together with A Large Modern Folding Fan marked as # 2 of an issue of 50. The paper fan, mounted à l'Anglaise on marron dyed wood sticks, shows three ladies from different centuries, each holding a fan that relates to the Age. A Chinese style red stamp features to the top left of the leaf. The screens are each 12 inches or 30.5cm, the fan guard is 11.75 inches or 30cm (5). All in good order.

Lot 2142

Three Art Deco Fans, or earlier, the first of a single shaped cotton leaf printed with red roses, mounted on wood sticks painted in white. Guard length 8.25 inches or 21cm. The second fan, of fontange form, with double paper leaf printed by Chambrelent, Paris, shows a lady in stylised costume, 20's headdress and large pink ostrich feather fan, with wings outspread behind, giving the appearance of a butterfly. Along the bottom edge of the leaf, the fan states ''Lumineux Radian a Bbe S.G.D.G, 23 B'd des Italiens Paris'', possibly referring to the patent but a little unclear. Mounted on plain wood sticks, the beige verso has a large blank cartouche, presumably meant for advertising, surrounded by stylised designs. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cm. The final fan, smaller, and again of printed paper in fontange form, mounted on basic wood sticks, depicts a lady amongst exotic flowers and leaves in Deco style, wearing a white dress, tall hair comb and carrying a matching pink fan. The cream verso advertises ''Objets d'Art, A Jeanne D'Arc, Horlogerie, Joallerie and Orfererie (a Goldsmith's shop) in Sète, in the South of France. Guard length 4.75 inches or 11.5 cm, overall height 7 inches or 18cm. The first fan is in good order, slight creasing at the top edge. Fan two is rubbed on folds and creased along the top as is fan three.

C. 1840’s French 2nd Empire Sappers and Pompiers brass Fireman’s helmet. All brass body, showing some light dents and very light corrosion spots, with central affixed S and P badge, showing central flaming bomb, axes and laurels in a trophy of arms display, with bandau motto to base ‘Sps Pompiers De Bernouil’. Full brass arch to crown, with stiff beaver fur comb. There is a red feather hackle to left side, above the thick scale chinstrap, with round rosette bosses to each side. Used leather liner to interior, showing screws and nuts, with remains of leather to underside of both peaks.

C.1900 era Western Australian Fire Brigade brass helmet. Brass body, with emu and kangaroo, with coat of arms centre badge, showing rising sun to top and bandau wording ‘ADVANCE AUSTRALIA’ front badge, being positioned underneath the ornate air vented brass comb. Side domed rose chinstrap bosses, with full brass chain chinstrap. All screws and posts are retained to interior, along with the full leather liner, missing just 1 finger. Helmet showing some age stains & light dents (mainly upper crown area & top of comb) and very light Verdigris to underside of badge. This is the first example of a Federation period Australian fire helmet to retains all original fixtures and fittings, with this being the very rare Western Australian issue helmet. Scarce.

No. 40301, Gamme No. 2097, playing eight traditional and operatic airs, single spring motor, two-part comb with brass comb washers, on plain brass bedplate, inset brass control board, tunesheet, in red stained interior, in grained case with the veneered lid inlaid with geometric fruitwood Rococo floral scrolls and musical instrument ensemble centre with noir ground, finished with quadruple stringing - 26.1/2'' wide, the cylinder 17.1/2''.. The last digit of the serial number was incorrectly written as a 2, with the 1 written over the top in the same hand. An easy mistake to make when several tunesheets to the same Gamme but different serial numbers have to be prepared. Tips & teeth complete, in working order

Hasselquist was a student of Linneaus, who oversaw publication of the work following Hasselquist's death in 1752. The first edition is uncommon, with translations more usually encountered.
